FREDONIA — Plattsburgh State had a great start but not necessarily a great finish as it defeated Fredonia 4-2 in SUNY Athletic Conference men’s hockey Friday.
Coach Bob Emery said he liked the way the Cardinals came out of the locker room to start the game, but they didn’t have that same leadership after the first intermission. Then they were outshot and outscored in the third period.
“I’m happy to be 4-0 but disheartened that we haven’t been able to get the players to play smart hockey,” Emery said. “We’ve given teams so much life at times.
“We don’t play smart with the lead. We turn the puck over. We play like a young team. We’ve got a long way to go mentally.”
Plattsburgh (4-0, 4-0 SUNYAC) visits Buffalo State tonight.
The Cardinals led 2-0 less than five minutes into Friday’s game. Mark Constantine tallied at 3:01, and 1:25 later Dakota Mason scored his first collegiate goal and Kyle Hall earned his first career assist.
“I’m happy when everyone gets their first goal, but the way Dakota got it was great,” Emery said. “He won a 1-on-1 battle and then walked right out and scored. Winning the 1-on-1 battle was what I like the best from a coach’s standpoint.”
Mason then picked up his first assist when Connor Gorman made it 3-0 near the end of the period. Kevin Emmerling also assisted.
Jared Wynia put Fredonia on the board 6:23 into the second period, and Luke Baleshta lit the lamp for the Cardinals just 48 seconds later.
The Blue Devils got a goal from Travis Fernley early in the third — Emery said Mathieu Cadieux misplayed the shot — and held a 13-8 advantage in shots for the period.
Emery said Plattsburgh played pretty well defensively in the third, but “we gave up that goal, and that really ignited the flame for Fredonia.”
Cadieux turned away 22 shots in Plattsburgh’s net, and Chris Eiserman had 24 saves for Fredonia (1-3, 1-2).
Buffalo State (3-2, 3-2) beat Potsdam 3-2 Friday. Emery hopes to see smarter play by the Cardinals today.
“We’ve got a talented team. That’s only a small part of it,” Emery said. “Character, heart and mental toughness come into play. And we gotta get better at the three besides talent.”
