Cardinals roll past Lyndon State

POTSDAM — After surviving a close game with Rutgers-Newark the day before, the Plattsburgh State men’s soccer team had a much easier time on Saturday.

The Cardinals (2-0) scored three goals in the first 12 minutes of the game and rolled to a 6-0 victory over Lyndon State to capture the championship in the Potsdam Collegiate Village Cup.

“We really talked about coming out and playing with confidence today,” Plattsburgh coach Chris Waterbury said. “I thought we were the better team going into the game, but I was thrilled with the intensity of the players.

“I don’t think they were happy with the way they started the game before.”

Freshman Alexis Archilla, the hero of Friday’s overtime win, scored two of the Cardinals’ first three goals Saturday, sandwiched around a goal by Ethan Votraw. The goals came at 3:55, 6:09 and 11:38.

Then, in the second half, freshmen Chris Bowden and Luke VanDixhorn got into the scoring act, as well as senior Steve Zacharczyk.

“It was nice to get a lot of people into the game and see the freshmen score,” Waterbury said. “We were able to get a little confidence early in the game and were able to rest some guys and get other people in.

“We ran our patterns well and were all over them (Lyndon State). It was a good team effort all around for us.”

The Cardinals held Lyndon State to without a shot on goal while finishing with a 16-0 advantage. Mitchell Jordon and Matt Bonomini shared time in net for Plattsburgh and were not credited with any saves.

Archilla, who finished the weekend with three goals and an assist, was chosen as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Teammates Matt Hamilton, Fabian Chapparo and Nick Economou was named to the all-tournament team.

In Saturday’s other tournament game, host Potsdam State dropped a 2-1 decision to Rutgers-Newark.
