Coon sets school record in steeplechase for Cards

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Another school-record performance by senior Colleen Coon in the 3,000-meter steeplechase highlighted a great two days at the ECAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships for the Plattsburgh State women’s outdoor track and field squad.

The regional meet, which was held on the campus of Springfield College, was won by Rowan who beat out runner-up Wheaton by 10 team points (63-53).

Coon turned in a third-place performance in the race, and broke her own school record by posting a time of 11:18.00. The next closest SUNYAC competitor was Ashton Hughes from SUNY Geneseo who posted a 17th-place finish.

Also taking part in the event was junior Katie Ehmann, who finished 19th out of 33 competitors in a time of 12:01.50.

Taking part in the ECAC meet for the final time in her career, senior Amanda Schermerhorn lined up in the starting blocks in a pair of events at the regional bout. The Scotia, N.Y., product and school record holder in the 1,500-meter run took to the lanes in that event and wound up with a 10th-place finish in a time of 4:37.45.

A similar finish awaited Schermerhorn in the 800-meter run as the school record holder in that event crossed the finish line in 2:17.24 — good for 10th place.

Competing in one of the more heavily-populated events at the meet, senior Rosi Cummings turned in a time of 59.52 in the 400-meter dash. That particular time helped the Plattsburgh native finish 21st among the 47-woman field.

After punching a ticket to the ECAC meet in last week’s last chance meet in Oneonta, N.Y., Plattsburgh State’s 4x800-meter relay put up one last great performance. Christen Averill, Jasmine Boncore, Coon and Cummings combined to produce a 14th-place finish in the race by posting a time of 9:46.68. Some 29 teams comprised the field in the relay race.
