Cards scoring woes continue

POUGHKEEPSIE — A weekend on the road ended up in two one-goal losses for the Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team in non-conference play.

The Cardinals, after dropping a 2-1 decision to Mount Saint Mary on Saturday, suffered a 1-0 setback at Vassar College Sunday.

“After yesterday’s game, where we didn’t play well, I felt we played a lot better today,” Plattsburgh coach Karen Waterbury said. “Vassar is a good team and we competed well against them.

“I felt there were a lot of positives that came out of the game today and we’ll go with that.”

The only goal of the game came at 9:07 of the first half when Kelsey Hamm sent a 25-yard pass that was headed into the net by Chloe Wheeler.

“We had a corner kick just prior to their goal, but weren’t able to score on it,” Waterbury said.

“Then, on their corner kick, we cleared it the first time. But they were able to send it back in and scored on a nice header.”

It was the ninth game-winning goal in Wheeler’s career at Vassar and the junior set a new school record.

Emma Nichols (1) and Stephanie Tapolsky (2) combined for three saves to record the shutout for Vassar (3-2-1). Charisse Abellard finished with five saves for the Cardinals, who are now1-4-1 on the season.

Plattsburgh, which has now lost one-goal games in three of its last four contests, travels to Skidmore College this coming Saturday for a 1 p.m. non-conference affair.
