Cardinals' Huber to run in NCAA meet

INDIANAPOLIS — Plattsburgh State sophomore Jess Huber learned Sunday she would be the lone representative of the Cardinals’ outdoor track & field team to compete at the 2014 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Huber, the former Beekmantown standout, will travel to Selby Stadium on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, to take part in no fewer than two events during the course of the three-day meet, which will begin at noon on Thursday.

One of the fastest short sprinters in the nation, Huber will run in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes at the national meet. The sophomore is the owner of the 11th-fastest 100-meter dash time in the country at the moment (12.03 seconds) as well as the sixth-best 200-meter dash time (24.43 seconds). Both of those times are Plattsburgh State program records.

The 2014 All-SUNYAC First Team honoree will begin her quest for an individual national title at 7 p.m. on Thursday when the qualifying heats of the 200-meter dash commence. In order to advance to the finals of the 200 — which are scheduled to begin at 4:25 p.m. on Saturday — Huber must be one of the eight fastest runners in the qualifying heats.

On Friday night at 7:30 p.m., Huber will line up in the starting blocks for the qualifying heats of the 100-meter dash. Should she post one of the eight best times in the qualifying round, she would advance to the 100-meter dash finals which are scheduled to get underway at 3:15 p.m. on Saturday.
