SUNYAC Honors: May 11, 2014

Buksa, Lupo secure spots on All-SUNYAC Baseball Team

CORTLAND — Two members of the Plattsburgh State baseball team – Frank Buska and Nick Lupo – earned spots on the 2014 All-State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) baseball teams, which were announced on Monday.

Buksa was selected to represent the Cardinals on the First Team while Lupo picked up Second Team honors for the first time in his career.

Buksa becomes the Cardinals’ first All-SUNYAC First Team member since Patrick Shaughnessy earned the distinction in 2011. In his first season at an NCAA Division III institution, Buksa – a native of Plattsburgh, N.Y. – took part in 33 of the Cardinals’ 36 engagements and was in the starting lineup for each of those tilts. Among Cardinal regulars, he ranked fifth with a batting average of .288.

The junior was tops among the Plattsburgh State ranks in terms of slugging percentage (.381), total bases (45) and doubles (nine) and drove in 12 runs on the year. Only three other SUNYAC student-athletes collected more doubles than Buksa through the course of the 2014 campaign.

During his third year patrolling a portion of the Plattsburgh State outfield, Lupo was the only member of the Cardinals’ squad to both take part in and start in each of the 36 games in 2014. The product of Fishkill, N.Y., was one of the most consistent players in the batter’s box for the Cardinals, finishing with a batting average of .301 – the second-best on the team.

In addition to the first .300 or better season at the dish as a collegian, Lupo saw marked improvements in a number of other statistical categories. His 25 runs led the team as did his 40 hits during 2014. The latter figure was the ninth-highest total among all SUNYAC student-athletes.

Buksa, Lupo and the rest of the Cardinals put the finishing touches on their 2014 campaign last Friday with a 7-2 win over SUNY Canton in the third-annual Brian Mehan Be The Match game. Plattsburgh State amassed a 14-22 record in 2014.
