Cardinal track, field records fall again

TROY — Breaking Plattsburgh State track and field program records is becoming more and more of a common occurrence for Jess Huber and Amanda Gadway.

Both athletes made their own revisions to the Cardinals’ record books as part of a highly productive day for the Cardinals at the Capital District Classic Saturday. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute was the host site for the meet.

The weather may not have been the greatest, but that didn’t stop Huber from racing to a championship finish in the 200-meter dash. The sophomore out of Plattsburgh was clocked in a school-record and ECAC-qualifying time of 25.4 seconds. That time bettered the old record of 25.95 set by Laurie Delilli back in 1998.

Huber continued to put her long jump prowess on display as well, placing second with an ECAC-qualifying leap of 5.21 meters.

Although she was just a third-place finisher in the hammer throw, Gadway’s heave of 47.09 meters proved to beat out her old program record by .02 meters.

Gadway didn’t limit her talents to just the hammer throw, though. The junior from turned in a championship finish in the discus throw with an ECAC-qualifying toss of 40.53 meters. She also came in as a runner-up in the shot put by producing a throw of 11.49 meters.

Ashley Gadway wasn’t too far behind her sister, as the junior finished fourth in the shot put (11.27 meters), fifth in the hammer throw (40.57 meters) and seventh in the discus throw (34.69 meters).

After steadily improving in the throwing circle all season, Stephanie Catalioto enjoyed her finest day as a collegian on Saturday. The sophomore from Cornwall qualified for the ECAC meet for the first time in her career with a runner-up discus throw of 37.57 meters.

Another strength of Plattsburgh State was its relay teams who made it a point to outpace the competition. In the 4x100-meter run nine teams lined up in the starting blocks, but Roxanne Grolley, Lauren Carlino, Kelly Siry and Huber joined forces to earn a first-place finish in 51.33 seconds.
