Cards win SUNYAC finale in extras

OSWEGO — The Plattsburgh State baseball team was eliminated from SUNY Athletic Conference postseason consideration in Friday’s frustrating 1-0, extra-inning loss at Oswego.

Saturday, the disappointed Cardinals could have felt sorry for themselves, went through the motions against the playoff-bound Lakers, hopped on the bus afterwards and headed home.

Plattsburgh, however, chose to compete.

The Cardinals (12-21, 7-11) rallied for four runs in the top of the ninth inning to take the lead, surrendered a run in the bottom of the inning to force extra innings and then scored three more in the 10th for a 9-6 victory.

“We were going through the motions a little bit,” Plattsburgh coach Kris Doorey said. “But, at some point, we were able to turn it on. For a while, it looked like it was going to be the same old, same old. But then we fought.

“At any time we could have said our (conference) season is over and just finished it out. But I’m proud of the guys. We used a lot of players and were able to squeeze out a win. We hung in there.”

The Cardinals got little going offensively for a good share of the contest and the Lakers (19-10, 10-8), behind the pitching of Ryan Brinkman, held a 5-2 lead through eight innings. Brinkman ended up going 7.2 innings and allowed two runs, both unearned.

Plattsburgh, however, broke through against the Oswego bullpen for four runs in the top of the ninth that resulted in a 6-5 lead.

Brian Latulipe started the inning with a bunt single and Nicholas Lupo singled with one out. Chris Pescetti then singled in Latulipe, and Lupo would later score on a wild pitch. Yuya Osawa followed with a single before the Lakers got the second out of the inning, with Osawa taking second, giving the Cardinals runners on second and third. Luke Weaver then had the big hit of the game, a two-out, two-run triple to left field to drive in the tying and lead runs.
