---- — PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State baseball team gained a little momentum Wednesday for a do-or-die SUNY Athletic Conference weekend on the road.

The Cardinals rapped out 13 hits in a 9-3 non-conference win over Clarkson University at Chip Cummings Field.

“We did get some momentum for the weekend,” Plattsburgh coach Kris Doorey said. “The guys deserved a game like this — we had a lot more fun today and that’s the way it should be.”

The Cardinals (7-15, 2-7) will leave for The College of Brockport today for a three-game conference set on Friday and Saturday.

Plattsburgh enjoyed one of its best offensive showings of the season against the Golden Knights (8-11).

Mat Chavez and Shane Houppert led the way with three hits each, with Chavez driving in two runs and Houppert adding three runs scored and a RBI.

John Casten chipped in with two hits and a RBI for Plattsburgh, which had eight players get at least one hit.

“We had all our starters back in the line-up today,” Doorey said. “We got three hits from our No. 9 hitter (Houppert).”

Plattsburgh, which scored a run in the first, tallied three times in the second for a 4-0 lead and then broke it open with four in the fifth for a 9-3 advantage. Neither team was able to score after that.

“We took advantage of some early walks and hit batsmen,” Doorey said. “We’ve had a lot of base runners at times in games this season, but today we were able to get some timely hits.

“We stole some bases and hit-and-run. We did a good job playing little ball. This is the type of baseball team we are and the type of baseball we need to play in order to be successful. We also didn’t have anyone strike out today.”

Corey Grossman allowed six hits, two earned runs, one walk and struck out one in going the first four innings for the pitching win. Shunsuke Sugimoto recorded the save with four scoreless innings in relief as he surrendered three hits, no walks and struck out one.

Geoff Baldwin, the first of seven Clarkson pitchers, took the loss. Dan Lenney and Nolan Driscoll each had two hits and a RBI for the Golden Knights.

The Cardinals play a 3 p.m. game against The College of Brockport on Friday before the two get together for a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
