Cardinal softball swept by Brockport

(Continued)

Jaime Berger went the first five innings for Brockport, giving up two hits, one earned run and six walks. Fleming held the Cardinals to one run and two hits through the final three innings to earn the win.

“Ashley (Marshall) pitched well,” Zweig said. “We showed some resiliency by battling back, but we need to score a little earlier and more often.”

The Cardinals totaled eight hits but left nine runners on base in a 3-1 loss in the second half of the conference doubleheader against Brockport.

The Cardinals tied it up in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by Megan Price, but Brockport’s Caitlyn Rana responded with an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning, giving the Golden Eagles a one-run lead.

Brockport picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning off an RBI single by Brianna Harris.

Iannone went 3-for-4 for the Cardinals, while Price added two hits. Kristin Nabor drew a pair of walks.

Brockport’s Korey Kibling went 4.1 innings to earn the win, giving up one run on eight hits. Berger held the Cardinals hitless through the last 2.2. innings to earn her first save of the season.

Cardinals rookie Sam Moss was tagged for the loss, surrendering three runs and eight hits in six innings of work.

“I don’t think these two losses will effect us down the stretch,” Zweig said. “As long as we’re in the postseason, anything can happen. We split with Brockport last year, too. Every day we learn something new about ourselves. Sam (Moss) did a great job on the mound in the second game, especially as a freshman.”

The Cardinals will look to rebound on Tuesday in a non-conference doubleheader at RPI. Game one is set for 3:30 p.m.
