Parke scores lone goal in PSU women victory

PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team fired 53 shots on net, but Alyssa Parke’s second-period goal was all the Cardinals mustered to beat Castleton 1-0 in Saturday’s nonconference game at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.

The Cardinals improve to 4-0 while the Spartans are 2-2.

After a scoreless first period that saw Plattsburgh State outshoot Castleton 19-5, Parke fired a low-line shot that beat Spartans’ goalie Jess Cameron glove side at 3:24 of the second period. Morgan MacInnis and Shannon Stewart collected assists on the tally.

Seconds earlier, Cameron was knocked over and appeared hurt, but she was able to regain her positioning just as Parke snapped the blue line shot. Spartan head coach Bill Bowes then put in Paula Stephens to relieve the injured Cameron.

Stephens stood her ground during the remainder of the period, stopping 13 shots in 16 minutes. The Cardinals ended the second period with 36 shots, but had little to show on the scoreboard.

“It was concerning to see us not finish (Saturday),” Plattsburgh State coach Kevin Houle said. “There were opportunities where we could’ve put a few more in, but we ended up shooting wide or putting one right at the goalie’s chest.”

Castleton’s goaltending kept the Spartans in the game against a Plattsburgh State offense that won races to the puck and fired the higher percentage shots. Stephens’ 30-save relief effort was just one of many hard-working aspects by Castleton, Houle said.

“Castleton came out with a great work ethic that we had to match,” Houle said. “We were able to match it, but unfortunately that didn’t show up on the scoreboard (Saturday).”

While Houle was pleased with the Cards’ work ethic, one of the main concerns lies with Plattsburgh State’s ineffectiveness on the power play. The Cards went 0-for-4 on the power play against Castleton and dropped to 2-for-16 on the season with the player advantage. In Saturday’s game, Plattsburgh State managed nine power-play shots.
