ONEONTA — In its final weekend of regular season play, the Plattsburgh State volleyball team (15-13) pushed its winning streak to four matches by earning two triumphs in its first day of competition at the Dig Pink Invitational hosted by Oneonta State.
With their margin for error whittled down to nothing after allowing Hartwick to take the first two sets, the Cardinals (15-13) fought back by taking the next pair of sets before earning a 15-10 win in the deciding fifth frame to earn a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Hawks in their first match of the afternoon.
The second frame saw the Cardinals produce their lowest point total in a set since Oct. 8, but the offense came alive for the designated visiting team in the following three sets. As a team, Plattsburgh State put up a .298 attack percentage during the five-set bout while limiting the Hawks to an offensive clip of .157.
Using a multi-pronged attack led by a match-high 19 terminations by Rosi Cummings, Plattsburgh State was able to offset 11 service aces by the designated home team. In addition to Cummings, who hit .267, Laura Diehl and Maggie Schrantz enjoyed a great match.
Diehl produced yet another efficient outing, blasting down 13 kills on 22 attempts with two attack errors for an attack percentage of .500. The sophomore out of Manorville, N.Y., also came up with a team-high three service aces, three solo blocks and a block assist.
Schrantz, who hails from Buffalo finished with a double-double, consisting of 11 kills and a team-high 10 digs. Her attack percentage of .389 was the second-highest of the match.
The dual-setting tandem of Meghan Clifford and Kristen Marchisotto passed out 18 and 17 assists respectively. Each of them also contributed two of Plattsburgh State’s 10 service aces.
The Cardinals owned a 6-4 advantage in blocks and racked up 38 digs. Hannah Strom had 12 kills to lead the Hawks.
With the momentum gathered from their 3-2 comeback victory over Hartwick earlier in the afternoon, the Cardinals had trouble in just one set in their 3-1 triumph over Montclair State.
Other than a 25-19 setback in the second frame, Plattsburgh State enjoyed a marked statistical advantage in nearly every offensive category. Another efficient attack plan helped the Cardinals hit .243 during the four-set bout while their defense stood strong, limiting the Red Hawks to a .157 attack percentage.
Also continuing their strong offensive performances from the first match were the trio of Cummings, Diehl and Schrantz. Cummings and Diehl tied for match-high honors in kills as each one floored 16. Schrantz added 14 terminations of her own as well as a pair of block assists.
Cummings completed a double-double with a team-high 19 digs and freshman Jackie Mariotti added 15 to Plattsburgh State’s match total of 62.
Diehl, Marchisotto and Jeanette Braun each chipped in a solo block as Plattsburgh State amassed seven blocks compared to eight by the Red Hawks.
Saturday will mark the final day of regular season matches for the Cardinals, as they are scheduled to take on Ithaca College at 1 p.m. before finishing their four-match slate at the Dig Pink Invitational by taking on host institution Oneonta State at 3 p.m.
