BROCKPORT — Friday’s SUNY Athletic Conference men’s soccer game at The College at Brockport started out perfectly for Plattsburgh State.
Ethan Votraw gave the Cardinals the lead just 8:52 into the contest.
But that would be the only highlight for Plattsburgh, which surrendered the next three goals in a 3-1 loss to the Golden Eagles that hurt the Cardinals’ chances of getting an opening-round bye in the conference tournament.
The setback dropped Plattsburgh to 11-4-1 overall and 5-3 in conference play.
“We can still end up in second and get a first-round bye,” Plattsburgh coach Chris Waterbury said. “But we have to win on Saturday and have both Cortland and Brockport lose or tie.
“But with what happened in the conference on Friday, we at least clinched a home game in the first round of the conference tournament.”
Votraw, who was wide open at the top of the box, got the ball from Alexis Archilla and found the net to give the Cardinals an early advantage.
But with 22:02 gone in the opening half, Peter DiLorenzo answered for the Golden Eagles (9-1-5, 4-1-3) after getting a pass from Chris O’Gorman through the Plattsburgh defense.
“We had a very good first half,” Waterbury said. “We played well, generated chances and kept the ball on the ground.
“They had a good goal later in the first half to equalize it when we didn’t slide over defensively. We could have defended that better, but I still felt we were the better team in the first half.”
It stayed 1-all until 28:11 was gone in the second half. Mark Sylvia scored the game-winning goal off a rebound. Then, with the Cardinals pushing up, O’Gorman added the finishing touch with 2:54 left in regulation.
“It was more of a direct game in the second half,” Waterbury said. “The ball was flying in the air more and we struggled with our tempo. Still, we generated chances off scrambles in front of their net.
“But they were so much bigger than we are and that made them tough to deal with. They took the lead after a long throw-in. Then, we had to push people up and they were able to get their third goal.”
Plattsburgh held a 13-10 shot advantage. Mitchell Jordon made two saves in net for the Cardinals and Casey Sullivan five stops for Brockport.
The Cardinals close out their weekend on the road with a 1 p.m. game today at Geneseo. The Knights dropped a 1-0 decision to Potsdam on Friday.
