---- — PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh State baseball coach Kris Doorey tried something different Tuesday afternoon.
It didn’t work, however, in the Cardinals’ 5-3 non-conference loss to Middlebury College at Chip Cummings Field.
“We gave an opportunity to some of our other players,” Doorey said. “We wanted to see if the coaching staff was missing something by not giving some of those players a chance to prove themselves the last few weeks.
“But in the back of our minds, that didn’t happen (Tuesday). They were given the opportunity and weren’t able to take advantage of it.”
Plattsburgh (6-15) held a 3-1 lead through six innings behind the pitching of Scott Orr and Joe Leddy. Orr allowed one run on two hits over the first three innings and Leddy surrendered a hit and two walks in pitching scoreless baseball over the next three.
“Orr continues to throw the ball well for us and Leddy did a good job in his first appearance,” Doorey said.
Colin Crawford, who took the loss in relief, allowed five hits and four runs over the final three innings as the Cardinals made a couple of errors that led to two of the runs being unearned.
“I felt bad for Crawford,” Doorey said. “It was a tough loss for him.
“But he retired the first two batters in the ninth inning and then walked two. So he brought some of the trouble upon himself.”
Sawyer Olson pitched the first five innings for the Panthers (4-10) and Noah Bakker went the rest of the way for the win. The two combined to allow seven hits and struck out 11
Dylan Sinnickson had two of the eight Middlebury hits, one being a triple.
Luke Weaver and Nicholas Lupo, batting 1-2 in the Plattsburgh order, led the way for the Cardinals with Weaver getting two hits and Lupo three. Ben Weightman added a triple.
“Weaver and Lupo are two of our regulars and they accounted for five of our seven hits,” Doorey said. “We didn’t get much offensively from the other players.
“And we made five errors in the game.”
The Cardinals are back at Cummings Field today for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference game with Clarkson University.
“We’ll have our regular players back in the line-up for that game,” Doorey said.
