Emmerling, Gove, Aveson, Houle honored

CORTLAND — Kevin Emmerling of the Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team has been named SUNY Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year.

Emmerling joins Oswego’s Paul Rodrigues, the Herb Hammond Player of the Year, and Geneseo’s Chris Schultz, the Coach of the Year, with the SUNYAC’s highest honors. The three awards are voted on annually by the conference coaches.

As a member of an impressive class of freshmen, Emmerling is the Cardinals’ top goal-scorer (14) and has amassed 17 points in league games. The Northbridge, Mass. product is ranked third in team scoring with 24 points. He’s 15th in conference scoring and averages 1.09 points per game. Emmerling has also contributed four power-play goals and three game-winning goals in 22 games this season.

Emmerling has been named SUNYAC Rookie of the Week three times. His most notable weekly award stemmed from his performance against Oswego on Feb. 16. In Plattsburgh’s 4-3 win over the Lakers, Emmerling had an assist and two goals, including the game-winner.

Emmerling becomes the 10th Plattsburgh State men’s hockey player to receive the SUNYAC Rookie of the Year Award and the first since Pier-Luc Belanger during the 2006-07 season.
