Cards finish without a loss

PSU women end reg season with shutout

ASTON, Pa. — The Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team skated to a 4-0 victory at Neumann University Sunday afternoon in ECAC West play to wrap up its unbeaten regular season at 23-0-2.

The program accomplished the same feat during the 2006-07 season, eventually capturing the first leg of its back-to-back national championships.

Much like Saturday’s game, Chelsea VanGlahn provided two goals to spark the No.1-ranked Cardinals’ (23-0-2, 15-0-1) offense. The forward scored the lone goal of the first period from Giovanna Senese and Sara Lanni at 18:29 to give Plattsburgh a 1-0 lead at the first intermission.

“We didn’t play very well in the first period,” Plattsburgh coach Kevin Houle said. “We had the lead, which is good, but we gave up too many opportunities.”

The nation’s top power-play unit flexed its muscles Sunday, scoring the last three goals of the game and finishing 3-for-7. Allison Era tallied a power-play goal at the 7:06 mark of the second period to put the Cardinals up by two.

“(Neumann) ranks third in the country in penalty minutes per game, and we had a lot of opportunities,” Houle said. “We took advantage of a few 5-on-3 chances and spent a lot of time on special teams. We had five kills, too.

“These types of games typically get you out of sync, but we had good pressure from all three of our lines. We put together some good shifts and owned time on attack.”

Teal Gove scored her team-leading eighth power-play goal at 7:41 of the third period to add to Plattsburgh’s lead. VanGlahn rounded out the scoring just 1:22 later with her second of the afternoon from Alyssa Parke.

Plattsburgh goaltender Sydney Aveson stopped all 20 shots she faced to earn her seventh shutout and improve to 19-0-2 on the year. Neumann’s Shannon Donnelly recorded 42 saves in the loss.
