Cardinals hang on against Clarkson

POTSDAM — The Plattsburgh State men’s soccer team left Hantz Turf Field with a win Wednesday, but not necessarily with a good feeling.

“It’s weird, it was a 2-1 win on the road at Clarkson, but as a team we were sort of bitter about it,” Plattsburgh coach Chris Waterbury said. “I think the mark of a good team is sometimes you win and you still don’t feel good about it.”

Alexis Archilla had a goal and an assist as the Cardinals improved to 5-0-1 on the year with a nonconference victory over the Golden Knights.

The Cardinals quickly jumped on the board with Archilla’s fourth of the year. A corner kick by Fabian Chaparro made its way directly to Archilla, and the rookie found the upper right corner with a header shot.

Plattsburgh State extended its lead to 2-0 in the 21st minute when a cross from Archilla found Nick Parrella. Parrella sent the ball past a diving Alex White for his third of the season.

But the Cardinals lost some of their momentum after that.

“We were absolutely just rolling, playing a great first half,” Waterbury said. “Honestly, I think maybe this might have been my fault; I subbed a lot. And it wasn’t that the subs let us down, but we lost our continuity in what we were doing.

“They got a goal back, and as odd as it sounds, we had an extraordinary amount of possession and never seemed to get the third goal.”

Clarkson’s Tucker Wilcox shot the ball just past the left post to make it a one-goal game at 31:48.

The Golden Knights were unable to get another shot on goal the rest of the game. The Cardinals finished the evening with a 13-7 edge in shots and a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
