SARATOGA – Senior Chris Martin posted a 14th place finish to lead the Plattsburgh State men’s cross country team to a fourth-place finish at the Saratoga Invitational hosted by RPI on Saturday.
Out of three SUNYAC institutions competing at the event, the Cardinals were the top finisher as they accumulated 134 points in the 8,000 meter run. Bates took the title in dominant fashion, posting just 15 points on the afternoon. Sixteen total teams comprised the field at Saratoga.
Martin, who crossed the line in a time of 26:07.33, picked up 13 points for Plattsburgh State and was one of three Cardinals who finished in the top 20. Mike Schram and Ryan Millar were the next finishers for the Cardinals. Schram took 26:17.01 to traverse the course and finished in 19th place while Millar earned 20th place, finishing less than one second behind his teammate with a time of 26:17.66.
Adam Shearer narrowly missed out on a top 20 finish, posting a time of 26:24.04 which was good for 22nd place.
Freshman Jason Flach rounded out the contingent of Cardinals that finished in the top 100 as he finished in 94th place with a time of 28:11.25.
Zach Rose was just out of contention for a spot in the top 100 finishers as he crossed the line in 101st place with a time of 28:22.79. John McKee was the final point-producing runner to finish for the Cardinals, posting a time of 31:12.16 and finishing in 155th.
In its final run before the SUNYAC Championships, Plattsburgh State heads to Watertown, Conn., next Saturday to take part in the Connecticut College Invitational. The race is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
Driscoll Leads Cardinal Women
SARATOGA — Although it was knocked out of the USTFCCCA national rankings this week, the Plattsburgh State women’s cross country team didn’t let that bother them as the squad posted a second-place finish among a 12-team field at the Saratoga Invitational on Saturday.
Once again, it was junior Kelley Driscoll leading the way for the Cardinals as she crossed the finish line in sixth place – missing out on a top-five finish by less than one second. Driscoll navigated the 4.8 kilometer course in a time of 18:04.34.
Just two seconds behind Driscoll was senior Colleen Coon who finished in seventh place with a time of 18:06.76. Also assisting the Cardinals in accumulating 80 points on the afternoon were Emma Deshaies and Amanda Schermerhorn. Deshaies, a freshman, finished in 11th place, posting a time of 18:13.84 while her senior teammate crossed the line in 12th place with a time of 18:14.62.
Sophomore Catherine Ehmann was the final Plattsburgh State runner in the top 50 finishers, posting a time of 19:17.38 – good for 49th place. Jasmine Boncore was just seconds behind, finishing in 53rd with a time of 19:22.94.
Amanda Joskow traversed the course in 20:15.57, crossing the line in 87th place while sophomore Briana Maginn posted a time of 20:28.14 to finish in 95th to round out the Plattsburgh State finishers in the top 100.
Bates College won the event with 59 points, but the Cardinals posted the best finish of the three SUNYAC teams that made the trip to Saratoga.
In their final tune-up before the SUNYAC Championships, the Cardinals will make for Waterford, Conn., next Saturday to take part in the Connecticut College Invitational. The race is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
