Cardinals finish tennis season on high note

BINGHAMTON — Despite suffering a tough loss on Friday, the Plattsburgh State women’s tennis team rebounded Saturday with a hard-fought 5-4 victory over Fredonia at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tennis Tournament at the Binghamton Tennis Center.

Three well-played doubles matches kicked off the second day of tournament action.

Emily Carlin and Kaitlyn Healy won their fifth match of the season at No. 1 doubles, defeating Fredonia’s Alison Phillips and Sara DiFulvio, 8-4. The Blue Devils earned their first point with an 8-3 at No. 2 doubles, but the Cardinal pair of Meghan Ryan and Janel Weaver emerged with an 8-6 victory at No. 3 doubles to give Plattsburgh State the lead heading into singles play.

Carlin picked up a win in the first singles flight, topping Phillips by a score of 6-3, 6-2. Carlin closes out the season with a 5-9 record in Plattsburgh State’s top singles slot.

Healy followed with a victory at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-2, to earn her team-leading sixth win. The Cardinal freshman wrapped up a 6-7 year at No. 2 singles.

While it appeared the Cardinals were in control of the match, Fredonia roared back by taking the third, fourth and sixth singles flights to tie it at 4-4.

The deciding point came at No. 5 singles as Plattsburgh State’s Jacqueline Ciriello clawed her way to a three-set victory to ensure the Cardinals’ victory. Ciriello bested Fredonia’s Stephanie Thompson, 7-5, in the first set before falling, 2-6, in the second set. Trailing 0-4 in the third set, Ciriello rallied to take the set, 6-4, and clinch the win.

Saturday’s match marked the end of two Cardinals’ collegiate careers – Meghan Ryan and Tedi Politano. Politano ends her four-year career with a 5-4 record in singles play and a 1-3 record in doubles. Ryan posted a career-high four singles win in her final season.
