---- — PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh State men’s soccer coach Chris Waterbury felt Friday afternoon’s game would open up once the Cardinals went up two goals.
It just took a little longer than expected for the Cardinals to get that second goal.
Still, Plattsburgh (8-1-1, 2-0-0) put another one in the win column with a 2-0 decision over Oswego in SUNY Athletic Conference play at the Field House Soccer Complex.
Alexis Archilla gave the Cardinals the lead just 2:38 into the contest and Nick Economou added the insurance with 18:27 left in regulation.
“It was a good win for us,” Waterbury said. “But the problem was the closeness of the game. Anything can happen in a 1-0 game and I never felt comfortable until we got the second goal.”
Plattsburgh held a 20-3 shot advantage and an 11-4 edge in corner kicks over the Lakers (0-8-1, 0-3-0).
“Unfortunately, you can dominate every statistic in a game, but there’s only one stat that matters,” Waterbury said. “And we had only a 1-0 lead for quite a while.”
The Cardinals grabbed the lead off a scramble in front of the Oswego net when Archilla headed a rebound off Lakers’ keeper Jon Runge and into the net. Nick Parrella picked up the assist on the play.
“We attacked the end line, kept the ball low and sent a cross in,” Waterbury said. “Usually good things will happen when you do that.”
Plattsburgh continued to apply pressure, but settled for the one-goal lead after 45 minutes of play.
“We were creating good chances,” Waterbury said. “We just need to keep the ball moving and not let it stop dead. We were doing some good stuff.
“But, no question, it was frustrating to put that much pressure on them and not score. We just needed that second goal for things to open up. But we’re struggling for that final product.
“I felt strongly that we deviated away from what we were doing well later in the first half. We had too much individual play. The players were able to re-organize themselves in the second half and I felt they did a good job.”
The Cardinals then added their second goal 26:33 into the second half when Economou headed in Tom Greene’s corner kick.
“We talk about going hard to the net,” Waterbury said. “It was a good goal. Nick cut in front of the keeper and headed the ball into the net.”
Mitchell Jordon made two saves in the Plattsburgh nets to record the shutout and Runge finished with six stops for the Lakers. The Cardinals took eight corner kicks in the second half alone.
Plattsburgh hosts Cortland in a 1 p.m. conference game today. The Red Dragons recorded a 1-0 win at Potsdam on Friday.
