First-half lapse costs Cardinals against Skidmore

PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team is still waiting for something to turn its season around.

It didn’t happen on Saturday.

Emily Saliterman scored goals just over a minute apart in the first half to give Skidmore a 2-0 victory over the Cardinals in nonconference play at the Plattsburgh State Field House Soccer Complex.

The Cardinals (1-5-1) played the unbeaten Thoroughbreds (5-0-1) on fairly even terms, except for a short time in the first half.

Saliterman sent in a long shot from the side that was just out of the reach of Plattsburgh keeper Charisse Abellard to give Skidmore the lead at 29:19.

Then just over a minute later, at 30:29, Saliterman beat a defender and found the corner of the net for a 2-0 advantage.

“We had that one letdown where we stopped running through the ball,” Plattsburgh coach Karen Waterbury said.

“They had the wind in the first half and took a good shot from the outside to get the lead. And then they came right back and scored a minute later to make it 2-0. It’s frustrating to see it happen. We need to stay focused for 90 minutes.”

The Cardinals had an excellent opportunity to grab a lead of their own earlier in the half, but were denied when Skidmore keeper Gab Lawrence came off her line and made the save in traffic.

“Early on, we weren’t able to get that momentum swing,” Waterbury said. “Getting that first goal would have helped.”

Plattsburgh had the wind in the second half, and the majority of the play was in the Skidmore end, with the Cardinals holding a 6-3 shot advantage over the final 45 minutes of play.

But the only really good chance for Plattsburgh came off a free kick in the final minute of the contest.

“We need to do a better job running through the ball and not stop competing at times,” Waterbury said. “We had our problems winning the 50-50 balls at certain times, and we need to compete harder as a team.
