Aveson named Division III Player of the Year

PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh State women’s hockey coach Kevin Houle was named the STX/AHCA Division III Women’s Coach of the Year, while goaltender Sydney Aveson was tabbed the NCAA Division III Women’s Ice Hockey Player of the Year Thursday.

Aveson and two other Cardinals were selected as All-Americans. The announcements were made at the student-athlete banquet for the 2014 NCAA Division III Women’s Ice Hockey Championship.

Aveson, a senior from West Covina, Calif., won the 2014 Laura Hurd Award, which signifies the player of the year. Now a three-time All-American and the 2014 ECAC West Player of the Year, Aveson has posted spectacular numbers this year: a 20-1-1 record, 0.54 goals-against average and a .971 save percentage.

“Sydney Aveson has been the backbone of our team over the past three seasons,” Houle said. “Syd has saved her best for last. This season, she leads the nation in goals-against average, save percentage and shutouts. She has broken several team and national records throughout this season.

“Sydney is also an outstanding individual, majoring in expeditionary studies. She is the only athlete at Plattsburgh to make it through the program holding a GPA of 3.50.”

Aveson is the third Plattsburgh player to win this award, following Danielle Blanchard (current Plattsburgh assistant coach) in 2008 and Teal Gove last year. She is also just the second goaltender to win the award. The runner-up for this year’s Hurd Award was Tori Charron, a senior forward from Norwich.

Aveson was also selected a First-Team goaltender in the East Region of the Women’s Division III CCM Hockey All-American Ice Hockey Teams.

Houle has led the Cardinals to their second consecutive ECAC West championship and fourth overall with a 26-1-1 record. He received his sixth conference Coach of the Year citation in a year that saw Plattsburgh sit atop the USCHO.com Division III poll for 17 straight weeks and land seven All-ECAC West selections.
