Plattsburgh State splits in baseball

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The day didn’t start out well for the Plattsburgh State baseball team on Sunday.

The Cardinals managed just two hits in dropping a 6-0 decision to Plymouth State in the first game of a doubleheader in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

It then got a lot better in the second game when Plattsburgh rebounded for an 8-5 victory, but not before making it interesting in the seventh inning.

“Plymouth State isn’t a bad team — they’re competitive in the Little East Conference,” Plattsburgh coach Kris Doorey said.

“It was good for us to get the win in the second game. After losing the way we did in the first game, you almost have to win the second.”

The nonconference doubleheader split left Plattsburgh at 2-5 overall and 2-1 on its trip to Florida.

The Cardinals are scheduled to play three games today — including a 10 a.m. twinbill with Wisconsin-Stout and a 4 p.m. contest against McDaniel College, which was moved up due to possible inclement weather.

Senior Tucker Regan went the distance for the Panthers (4-2) to get the win in the opener as he struck out six, walked one and allowed just two hits.

Nick Lupo and Frank Buksa accounted for the only Plattsburgh hits.

“He (Regan) was pretty good and we didn’t have a lot of quality at-bats,” Doorey said. “We thought we would be better against him the second time through the line-up, but he got most of his strikeouts during that time.

“We had only four base runners — two hits, a walk and hit batsman. It’s tough to win like that.”

Losing pitcher Scott Orr started for the Cardinals, with Kyle Kelly taking over in the fourth and Luis Pepen Matos in the sixth.

“Orr got the first two outs in the second, but hit the next two batters and gave up a two-run double on a 1-2 pitch to their No. 9 hitter,” Doorey said. “They then bunched together three hits in their three-run fourth and we made a couple of errors.
