NORTH HEMPSTEAD — The Plattsburgh State lacrosse team built up a 9-4 lead after three periods Saturday and then held on for a 9-7 victory over Haverford College in nonconference play.
Robbie Ashlaw led the Cardinals (5-1) with three goals and an assist, while Brendan Damm chipped in with two goals. James Higgins, Cole Anderson, Joe Eiseman and Tom Monahan added one apiece.
Andrew Hauk stopped 13 shots in net for Plattsburgh.
Chris Christensen and Tav Hafner paced the Fords (1-4) with two goals each, while Jack Bodine, Christian Clay and Geoff Geppert added one apiece.
Christensen gave Haverford the lead early in the contest, but Anderson, Ashlaw and Higgins all countered for the Cardinals to make it 3-1.
The Fords cut their deficit to one after one, only to have Eiseman, Damm, Monahan and Ashlaw rattle off goals to put Plattsburgh up, 7-2.
After Haverford cut it to 7-4, Ashlaw’s third goal of the contest gave the Cardinals an 8-4 halftime lead.
Damm then scored the only goal of the third as Plattsburgh was able to take a five-goal edge into the fourth.
The Cardinals held a 31-20 shot advantage over the first three periods. But Haverford held a 15-6 edge in the fourth and creeped closer on two goals by Hafner and one from Bodine.
Plattsburgh won 15-of-19 face-offs.
The Cardinals are next at Connecticut College on Wednesday.
