Plattsburgh State lacrosse kicks off season today

PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State men’s lacrosse team set a new standard last season.

The Cardinals finished 14-4 overall, a school record for single-season victories, and 5-1 in SUNY Athletic Conference play.

The Cardinals recorded their first-ever post-season win, a 15-7 home decision over The College at Brockport in the conference semifinals and made their first-ever trip to the title game where they fell, 9-2, at Division III power Cortland.

The season was capped off by Ryan Cavanagh becoming the first-ever Plattsburgh men’s lacrosse coach to be honored as SUNYAC Coach of the Year.

It’s a new season, however, with the Cardinals opening their campaign with a noon nonconference game today against Norwich University at the Plattsburgh State Field House Lacrosse Complex.

The Cardinals have received votes in the USILA Division III pre-season lacrosse poll.

Offensively, Plattsburgh will be bolstered by the return of three of its six leading scorers from a year ago — Brendan Damm (36-16-52), Tim Lawrence (30-16-46) and Tom Duggan (17-10-27).

The Cardinals have a 17-game regular season schedule and will play their first SUNYAC game on March 29 at Geneseo.
