Former Plattsburgh High standout Charlie Mason is named men’s basketball coach at New England College after 8 years at Johnson (Vt.) State.

Terry Aubin of Cadyville wins the gold medal for 16-yard Class B individual trap shoot at the annual New York Police & Fire Games in Albany. Aubin and teammates Steve Weightman, Timmy Aubin, David Jock and Joey Rice earn a bronze in team competition.

Chris Washburn’s 2-out, run-scoring single in the bottom of the 7th inning lifts the Clinton County Mariners to a 5-4 win over Malone in American Legion baseball action. Aaron Judd and Dave Waldron collect 2 hits each for the Mariners while Tyler McGibbon leads Malone with 2 hits.

Plattsburgh High graduate Kim Hokanson has been named the full-time women’s hockey coach at SUNY Cortland.

Senior Liz Jackstadt of Plattsburgh helps Ithaca College place third in varsity eight at the NCAA Div. III Rowing Championships.

 

20 YEARS AGO (1992)

Mike Martin scores from Bob Ouimet to give the Chateaugay Merchants a 1-0 victory over Capco in North Country Soccer League play. Alfie LaDue records the shutout while Shay McAuliffe is in goal for Capco.

Peru’s Lynn Baker and Lake Placid’s Gonzalo Felgueroso and Steve Hudak are recognized as the outstanding athletes at North Country Community College.

Brad Marshall’s two-run single over a drawn-in third baseman gives Brushton a 3-2 victory over a sweep of their Northern Valley Baseball League doubleheader with Cornwall.

Joe Rockhill’s 2-run single ignites the game-winning rally as Lake Placid Post 326 captures the championship of the Third-Annual John J. Fell Memorial American Legion baseball tournament. Terry Hammond’s

2-out RBI single in the eighth brings in the winning run in the 8-7 win over South Troy.

 

25 YEARS AGO (1987)

Plattsburgh’s Kathy Griffin places third in B Division singles while Bonnie Gregware takes third in B All Events in the New York State Women’s Bowling Association Tournament.

Sport About of Essex Junction, Vt. Defeats the CVBL All-Stars 6-4 despite 2 hits from Doug Quigley and a triple by Gary Magee.

Saranac graduate Bonnie Wood Maggy is named coach of the women’s wheelchair tennis team for the USOC Sports Festival.

The Los Angeles Kings select Chris Panekwith the 11th pick in the NHL’s supplemental draft; however, the All-American defenseman announces he will return to Plattsburgh State for his junior season.

Ed Bruni ends Brad Streeter’s4-year reign over the Whiteface Mountain Uphill Foot Race.

Chris Herdic scores 2 goals and Joe Aguirre and Chris Waterbury one each to lift the Fourth Ward to a 4-3 triumph over the Lake Placid Express in a battle of Adirondack Amateur Soccer Association unbeatens.

 

30 YEARS AGO (1982)

Pete Harrigan is named MVP while Jeff Roussell chips in with 3 hits and winning pitcher Tom Latinville adds a pair as Latinville’s nips Barcomb’s TV 7-6 in the final of the 8-Post Slo-Pitch Softball Tournament. It is the fifth straight tournament title for Latinville’s.

Former St. John’s Academy standout Bob Ducatte is named football coach at Rensselaer Poly (RPI).

The Thumbs Up of Moriah — Shirley Marinello, Marge Brewer, Ida Poirier, Wilma Venet and Fay Tedford — win the 19th Annual Women’s Bowling Tournament at North Bowl Lanes.

Bud Fagan beats Mark Wilkins in a match of cards after the 2 Lake Placid golfers finish the Craig Wood Open House Tournament with scores of 176. Patty McLean of Plattsburgh shoots an 86 to win the women’s division.

 

40 YEARS AGO (1972)

Westport’s Ralph Decker is off a fast start at Saratoga Raceway with 14 winners.

Paul O’Connell crushes a 2-run homer while Chuck Dragoon and Craig Billups add solo shots in Post 20’s 8-5 victory over Ellenburg in the Legion team’s CVBL debut.

Corina Whitener, Linda Gagnon, Bill Filion and Jane Hagar each earn 3 blue ribbons in the Keeseville Riding & Driving Club show.

Leo Richard goes 4-for-4 as Town Tavern posts a 16-11 win and ends the Rouses Point Softball Club’s winning streak at 23 games.

 

50 YEARS AGO (1962)

Beverly Guyette, 14, of Plattsburgh, wins the Grand Championship in the Girls Junior Division of the Pin Buster Bowling Show in Montreal.

Saranac Lake’s Angus Voudren captures the Open Division in go-kart racing in Plattsburgh. Dick Miller is second and Ira Snow, third. Peru’s Mike McCarrell (Bushing) and Bob Thompson (Stock) win the other divisions.

Carl Stohnpresident of the Plattsburgh Golf Club since 1948, resigns to concentrate on teaching.

Peru’s Don Fairley (100, 220) and Mineville’s Gene Thompson (shot put, discus) were double winners for Section VII in its 263-169 loss to Section X in intersectional track competition. Mineville’s Ralph Paden (mile), Bob Graves of Plattsburgh (880) and Peru’s Al Russell (hurdles) were the other Section VII winners.

 

60 YEARS AGO (1952) Gib Darrah goes 4-for-4 while Phil O’Connell belts a 3-run homer to back the 4-hit pitching of Bob Ryan as Cadyville cuffs Peasleeville 23-3 in Adirondack League play.

Gary O’Leary is 3-for-4 at the plate in leading Morrisonville to a 10-8 win over Saranac Lake in the Champlain Valley League.

 

70 YEARS AGO (1942)

Dick Elliott scatters 5 hits as the Plattsburgh Lafayettes open their season with a 7-2 victory over Dan Newell’s team. Gertsch took the loss, allowing 10 hits.
