CLERMONT, Fla. — Ashley Marshall earned both wins as the Plattsburgh State softball team went 2-0 Wednesday at the National Training Center Spring Games.
The Cardinals held off Trinity 12-8 and then edged UMass Boston, 1-0. The start times of both games were pushed back because of weather.
“It was a long day. We did a good job; we played solid defense all day,” Plattsburgh coach Stephanie Zweig said. “The pitchers did great. Even though the teams we played are not well known, they still were competitive, so it was good we stayed focused and were able to get two wins.”
Plattsburgh (6-2) takes on Tufts and Bethany College this morning.
The Cardinals put up six runs in the fourth inning against Trinity to take an 8-2 lead. Trinity got as close as 8-6 before the Cardinals added three runs in the sixth and another in the seventh. Brianna Clarke hit a triple and a double, while Samantha Tenney, Nicole Milano and Kerry McCarty all doubled.
“We’re definitely putting it together,” Zweig said of the Cardinals’ hitting. “We definitely can be stronger, but it’s a great start to the year.”
Marshall started the game, was replaced by Morgan Anderson in the fifth and then returned in the seventh to close it out.
Against UMass Boston, the Cardinals scored the game’s lone run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Marshall relieved started Samantha Moss in the fifth inning.
Anderson and Moss are both freshmen who have been seeing some time in the pitching circle during the season-opening trip.
“I think they’ve been doing well. Every time they go in, they’ve been better,” Zweig said. “The benefit of having them here while Ashley is still here is they get to learn from her. So it’s a team effort every time we take the field, and it’s nice to have that depth.”
