10 YEARS AGO (2004)

Heidi Benware goes 3-for-3, Majo Cabalit clubs a 2-run homer and Tracy Mitchell tosses a 2-hitter as Plattsburgh State beats Brockport 9-0 on its way to a doubleheader sweep in softball.

David Waldron gets the win and makes a spectacular play to end Game 2, capping Plattsburgh State’s twin-killing in Oneonta. Waldron pitches 6 innings before switching to right field where he makes a diving catch and nails a runner at home to complete the sweep.

Bryan Duprey strikes out 8 in Clinton CC’s 10-4 victory over Adirondack CC in Game 1. Host ACC comes back to win Game 2, 20-16, despite Dustin Judd’s 4 hits and 3 RBI. Judd also has 3 hits in the opener.

20 YEARS AGO (1994)

Crown Point’s Jody Bigalow, who averages 22 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists a game, is named MVAC Player of the Year.Teammate Heather Bush, Schroon Lake’s Becca Robinson and Mika Conley and Erin Pratt of Westport round out the first team.

Former PHS standout Jason Miller is batting .429 for nationally ranked College of Saint Rose, 17-3 in Div. II baseball. Area athletes Warren Horner, Gary Duquette, Brett Paepke and Darren D’Attilio also contribute to the Knights’ showing.

Casey Lane pitches a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts as Malone opens the season with an 8-0 win over St. Lawrence.

Canada defeats Team USA, 6-3, before 3,198 at the Olympic Center to win the Women’s World Hockey Championship.

25 YEARS AGO (1989)

Former Ticonderoga star Amy Huestis, a 5-foot-11 junior center, helps Clarkson University post its best record ever (26-7) in women’s basketball. Huestis nets 27 points and grabs 6 rebounds in the regional consolation game.

Former Vermont standout Jeff Brown is named the MVP as he leads the Ponderosa past Pizza Hut 115-107 in the PBA Basketball final. Mike Deane and Drew Skonberg contribute 22 points apiece while Holman Harley scores 28 for Pizza Hut.

John Bishop of Clinton County and Susan Morgan of Essex County are honored as the Area 26 Special Olympics Athletes of the Year.
