10 YEARS AGO (2002)

▶ The Plattsburgh Thunder, one of two new teams, will begin play in the New York Collegiate Baseball League in 2002. Terry Meron is the general manager and assistant coach.

▶ Art Graves and Gayle Porcelli win the annual Run for Hope Half Marathon in Elizabethtown.

▶ The Plattsburgh Ice Birds repeat as champions of the Stowe (Vt.) Women's Hockey Tournament. Team members include Judy Bechard, Karen Wiley, Barb MacDonald-Ferguson, Katie O'Connell, Kaitlyn Branon, Sheila Davenport, Hilarie Dickson, Cathy Eldridge, Kathie Side, Carol Dumas, Kathleen Roach, Mary LoTemplio, Barb Foster, Theresa Page and Cheryl Malcolm. Kent Eldridge is the coach.

▶ Former PHS standout Chris Burdo, a junior catcher for The College of Saint Rose, is named to the Northeast 10 Conference weekly honor roll for going 5-for-9 with 2 homers in 3 games. He is hitting .400 (20 for 50) for the season with 5 doubles, 2 homers and 11 runs batted in.

20 YEARS AGO (1992)

E Justin Gerry of Morrisonville, Martin Podgorski, John Fagan, Jenny Briggs and Ingrid Rand of Lake Placid; Matt Parsons, Sara Getman, Seth Dame, Jamie Morris and Scott Johnson of Plattsburgh; and Devon Whitney of Keene represent New York State in the Junior III-IV (ages 13-14) Alpine Ski Championships.

▶ Larry Maxwell shoots a 35 to win the Saranac Lake Kiwanis Benefit Challenge Golf Tournament at Ray Brook. Bob Bevilacqua comes in second with Tom Welch, third. Debbie Gordon shoots a 37 to lead the women. Bill Dupree, Mike Dupree, John Derby and Pat Redmond post the top score (144) among the foursomes.

25 YEARS AGO (1987)

E Harley Mattila, playing for The Classic Lounge in Plattsburgh, edges Dave Galarneau, of Milano's in Peru, 3 games to 2 to win his third A Division in the 11 years of the Northern New York 8-Ball Tournament.

▶ Blake Frechette resigns for financial reasons after 2 years as athletic director at Mount Assumption. He takes on a better-paying job. Frechette takes on a better-paying job.

30 YEARS AGO (1982)

▶ Lowell University, playing before a highly partisan home crowd of 3,700, defeats Plattsburgh State for the second year in a row in the NCAA Div. II-III Men's Ice Hockey Championship. Chip Grabowski scores the lone goal for the Cardinals in the 6-1 defeat.

▶ Herb Hammond leaves his post as Plattsburgh State men's hockey coach after 2 years to accept the head position at Brown University.

▶ Ricky Cofer defeats Ed Shivokevich 21-8, 21-15 to win the Men's Open in the P-R Racquetball Tournament. Pete McMillan, Gene Verwiebe, Scott Bromberg, Gail Morris, Jackie Wrenn and Barb Culley win their respective classes.

▶ Plattsburgh State junior Paul Glodis, of Flushing, is named to the 10-member New York State Div. III Men's Basketball Team. He led the Cardinals in scoring, averaging 18 points a game, while collecting 218 rebounds. His shooting accuracy from the field was 59 percent.

40 YEARS AGO (1972)

▶ MVP Jim Lacey hits for 39 points to lead The Store Tavern to a 91-89 win over Winooski, Vt. in the championship game of the Crown Point Basketball Tournament. Teammate Bob Barney is named to the second all-tournament team.

▶ Rouses Point's Dave Chevalier, senior captain of the Norwich University swim team, earns his third varsity letter.

▶ The Canadiens overcome Mike Deloria's 3 goals to defeat The Voyageurs 4-3 to win the Broad Street Elmentary Floor Hockey championship. Gordie Little stars in goal for the Canadiens with Steve Longe getting 2 goals. Robbie Williams and Ed Martin also score for the winners.

50 YEARS AGO (1962)

▶ Six-foot-four freshman Mike Stanton of Plattsburgh State finishes 11th nationally in rebounding for small colleges, averaging 17.7 a game. He also averages 10.4 points per game.

▶ Rouses Point's Mike Sweeney and Ron Lysik are expected to be in the starting lineup for St. Michael's College. Sweeney, a shortstop, batted .500 in 1961. Lysik, a sophomore, will be making his varsity debut at first base.

▶ Ray Gagnon nets 17 points to lead the Monty Street All-Stars to a 54-44 victory over the Bailey Avenue All-Stars for the Junior League championship. Jeff Gibeau leads the Bailey stars with 28 points.

 

60 YEARS AGO (1952)

▶ Dean and Wayne Benson each score 11 points to lead the High School All-Stars to a 51-41 victory over Diamond Match in an exhibition basketball game. Fran Doyle nets 11 for Diamond Match.

 

70 YEARS AGO (1942)

▶ Steltzer scores 16 points and O'Brien, 11, to lead The Monopole to a 44-41 victory over Port Henry in the Gold Medal Basketball Tournament final. Dupuis leads the Porters with 12 while Pond nets 9.

▶ Lake Placid's Jack Wilkins, skiing for St. Lawrence University, wins the state downhill title at Mount Jo in Lake Placid. John Neal of Northwood is runner-up while Ray Wrisley of St. Lawrence comes in third.

▶ Bert Harkness and Leo Nash combine on a 1,227 score to win doubles in the Second-Annual Plattsburgh Bowling Association Tournament at Nash Recreation Parlor. Henry Brunelle, with a 610, edges Gil Rubado, with a 607, to win high series. Joe Condo posts a 720 series in the team event with a high game of 278.
