Flashback will revive memories of great local athletes and outstanding team successes.10 YEARS AGO (1999) Adam VanNortwick, Josh Woodruff, Dan Hogan and Nate Buchanan lead Saranac Lake to a 28-29 win over 3-time champion Seton Catholic in a run-off for the CVAC boys' cross-country title.
Chris Trombley, 16 for 23 for 187 yards and 2 TDs, sets CVAC season records for completions (104) and yards passing (1,300) in Peru's win over Saranac.
Jessica Guernsey scores 4 goals to lead Chateaugay past Hammond.
Eighth-grader Leah Forrence leads PHS to a 101-69 win over Peru in swimming, giving PHS revenge and the CVAC title.
Seton Catholic nips NCCS 1-0 to win the CVAC Div. I title in boys' soccer. Knights' keeper Ryan Gingrich makes a point-blank save and punts the ball to Ion Etxaide for the quick score.
Noelle Short scores 2 goals and assists on another as Tupper Lake tops NAC 3-0 to clinch its seventh CVAC Div. II soccer title in 8 years.
20 YEARS AGO (1989) Steve Hoar resigns as Plattsburgh State hockey coach just 2 days before the season opener. Bob Emery takes over as interim coach and leads the Cardinals to an 11-2 win in Fredonia.
Kim Columbe scores twice and Keely Dwyer, once, as Chazy tops Willsboro 3-0 for the MVAC girls' soccer crown. Keene, left out of the playoff, protests at the title game.
David Betrus returns a kickoff 82 yards to score with 1:32 to play, giving Peru a 22-16 win over AuSable Valley.
The Malone boys, led by Chad Lawrence, win their 15th straight Section X cross-country crown, while the girls, paced by Sue Bergh, make it 12 straight.
25 YEARS AGO (1984) Scott Purdy gets 4 goals and an assist as Keene upsets Crown Point 5-1.
Kim Baker and Tara Bush score goals and Kari Parrish makes 16 saves as PHS stuns CVAC champ MAI 2-0 in the sectional playoffs.
University of New Hampshire standout Kathy Brandell wins the New England cross-country championship, setting a Boston Franklin Park course record of 17:38 for 5 kilometers.
Junior tackle Kevin Quinn is named Dartmouth College Defensive Player of the Week after coming up with 8 tackles, including 3 solos, and a fumble recovery.
30 YEARS AGO (1979) Pete Camelo sets an Appalachian (N.C.) State record with an 82-yard touchdown reception.
Lisa Doolan scores 3 goals as Crown Point takes the MVAC title with a 3-0 win over Westport.
Debbie Hull and Lori Duprey each score twice as AuSable Valley beats Saranac 4-0 to clinch the CVAC crown.
Troy Duprey and John McCarthy score as NCCS tops NAC 2-0 to claim the CVAC soccer title.
Frank Dumoulin runs for 3 TDs and adds 2 extra points as Tupper Lake stuns previously unbeaten and 10th-ranked Saranac Lake 20-6.
Andy Light throws 4 TD passes — 3 to Joe Burl — as Beekmantown blows out PHS 60-8.
40 YEARS AGO (1969) St. John's and Moriah, both unbeaten, play to a 12-12 tie. Jim MacLean and Jeff Murdock score for the Vikings while Brent Dupee and Bob Watson, on a pass from Larry Carpenter, score for the Irish.
Jon Egglefield, Pat Ward, Jerry Rosenbaum and Allan Beal score to lead Elizabethtown-Lewis over Northwood for the MVL soccer championship.
Ted Martin and Bob Trombley score as Chazy claims the CCIL soccer title with a win over Mooers.
50 YEARS AGO (1959) Harold Gohlke and Dan Yetman each score 2 TDs as OLVA buries Clifton-Fine 53-7.
Dick LaValley runs for 3 scores in Ticonderoga's 26-0 win over Plattsburgh.
Larry Pombrio, Ed Czarnetzki and Randy Trahan score as Chazy beats Ellenburg to finish unbeaten in CCIL soccer.
Al Gates scores twice and Dick Frisbie once as Westport tops Keene 6-3 in a playoff for the MVL title.
Chris Greer scores on a quarterback sneak with seconds to play and Mike Behan bulls his way over for the PAT, lifting St. John's to a 20-19 win over MAI and the CVL football championship.
60 YEARS AGO (1949) Sherman Duquette and Don Coolidge score field goals and Joe Lashua adds a penalty kick to give Peru a 5-3 win over Champlain and the CCIL soccer title.
Mineville and Plattsburgh High play to a 0-0 tie. Plattsburgh's Bill Stetz has the ball stolen on the goal line, setting off a lengthy dispute over whether he had crossed the line. However, the ball is finally turned over to Mineville. Jim Brannigan, former PHS standout, coaches Mineville in the absence of Steve Kazlo, whose wife had died earlier that day.
Oscar LeClair runs for 4 TDs in MAI's 47-0 rout of Ticonderoga.
70 YEARS AGO (1939) Port Henry and Mineville play to a 13-13 tie before 1,000 fans in the first night football game in the North Country. Butterfield and Dupuis score for the Porters while Seloski runs for one score and catches a TD pass from Chapot for the other Mineville score.
Bill Oldfield finishes first and teammate Win Williams comes in third to lead Saranac Lake to the Section VII cross-country championship in Canton. Chateaugay's Fritz comes in second. Ellenburg, Chateaugay and Malone claim the next three places in the team standings.
