10 YEARS AGO (1999) John Friedrich's goal snaps a 1-1 tie, sending Chazy on to a 3-1 win over Westport in a battle of soccer unbeatens.
James Trummer runs for 260 yards and 4 touchdowns in Saranac Lake's 34-6 victory over Saranac. Tom Millea snares a 41-yard TD toss from Chris Trombley, giving Peru a 13-6 come-from-behind win over Tupper Lake.
Kenny Bezio rushes for 110 yards and a TD in AuSable Valley's 25-0 win over PHS while Earl Parks runs for three scores as Beekmantown beats Seton Catholic 28-7.
Rachel Dutil converts a nice feed from Brandeis Sample with 12 minutes left as Northeastern Clinton edges AuSable Valley in a game of unbeatens.
Christina Hutchins scores her first varsity goal to lift Willsboro over Lake Placid 2-1.
20 YEARS AGO (1989) Tom Stricker returns as Ticonderoga football coach after 10 years away to lead the Sentinels to a 20-18 win over Seton Catholic.
Wally Edwards scores a touchdown and Kevin Hammond adds the conversion as Moriah edges Peru 26-24 in 6 overtimes.
Brad Scott, Robbie Perry and Kevin and Greg Taylor star as Malone beats Massena in football, 26-8, for the first time in 42 years.
Mark Kiroy kicks a 33-yard field goal and scores one touchdown as Saranac nips PHS 10-9 in Paul Leahy's coaching debut with the Chiefs.
Sheryl Carey scores to lift Keene to a 1-0 win over Elizabethtown-Lewis, overcoming 25 saves by Melissa Montville.
25 YEARS AGO (1984) Tony Fazzone throws 3 TD passes to Scott McCormick in leading PHS to a 27-8 win over MAI.
Fred Granger runs for 110 yards and 2 scores and Darrin Rathbun accounts for 2 TDs as Ticonderoga spoils Saranac Lake's CVAC debut, 27-0. It is also the first night game for the Sentinels.
The Hull Olympics score a 7-6 overtime victory, ruining the Plattsburgh Pioneers' debut in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League before 1,460 at the Field House.
Lonnie Cleland's two-run double spurs Hess Gas on to a 4-3 win over the Press-Republican in the fifth and deciding game of the Gentlemen's Slo-Pitch Softball finals.
30 YEARS AGO (1979) Barb Sweeney scores 2 goals and Mary Stiles, one, while Patty Muldowney makes 14 saves for her second straight shutout as Saranac Lake beats Gouverneur 3-0.
Jim Burt's goal with 4 minutes left lifts Willsboro to a 1-0 win over Schroon Lake, spoiling a stellar effort by Wildcats' keeper Ralph Clark, who makes 21 saves.
Nancy Rabideau scores with 4 minutes to play giving Chazy a 1-0 win over Peru in CVAC soccer.
Scott LaTour's fourth-period goal caps Crown Point's comeback in a 5-4 win over Keene. Roland Macey scores twice for the Panthers while Andy Quinn gets two for the Beavers.
40 YEARS AGO (1969) Larry Carpenter tosses 2 TD passes to Scott Stowe and one to Bob Watson to lead St. John's to a 34-8 win over St. Pius. Steve McGivney runs back a blocked punt for another score. Art Niederbuhl runs for the Golden Knights' lone score.
Barry Waling and Brent Cringle score touchdowns and Tom Benware is the defensive star as Saranac plays MAI to a 14-14 tie. Al Hassler scores both Mountie touchdowns.
Jon O'Brian scores 2 goals, leading Champlain to a 2-1 win over defending CCIL soccer champ Ellenburg.
50 YEARS AGO (1959) Chris Greer throws 4 TD passes — 2 each to Tom McFadden and Slattery Drown — in St. John's 34-6 win over Franklin Academy of Malone.
Nora Mooney, 14, of the Pine Ridge Bowmen, wins the New York State Intermediate Championship in archery.
Charlie Trombley captures his ninth feature win of the season at Airborne Speedway.
Bob Mitchell, Ralph Paden and Gary Mullen are the defensive stars as Mineville defeats Granville 21-0. Dave Wykef, Eddie Nels and Duke Paden score TDs.
60 YEARS AGO (1949) Center Dick Krause and end Tom Giambruno are the lone returning starters for PHS as it prepares for its season opener with Whitehall.
George Coryer pitches a 3-hitter as the Genesees whip the Peru Legion 14-1 to tie for first in the Adirondack League.
Winning pitcher Bud French helps his cause with an RBI triple as McMartin Motors downs Imperial Cleaners 7-5 in City Softball play.
70 YEARS AGO (1939) Everest Carroll of Keeseville beats Edwin Sweetser of Plattsburgh 4-3 in 35 holes to win the Conway Cup on the Hotel Champlain golf course. Roger B. Prescott shoots a 68 to set a new amateur record for the course, 3 strokes off the pro mark.
Lawrence Eaton is elected president of the Chazy Athletic Association with James Gagnon, Millard Mayo, Jr. and Glenn Parrott the other officers.
