10 YEARS AGO (1999) Gail Ricketson-Helfer, a bronze-medalist in rowing at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, claimes 2 golds and a silver medal in the National Masters Rowing Championships.
Michelle Derrigo scores in a shootout to lift Garrow & Sons to victory over Lady Giroux's in the North Country Women's Soccer League final.
Kyle Rock shoots a 72-hole 298 to repeat as Bluff Point club champ while Nahida Durham beats Sue Stefanick 3 and 2 in match play for the women's title.
Nick Chase pitches a 6-hitter and rips a solo homer while Jerry Kowalowski and Scott Baker chip in with 2 hits apiece as the Lyon Mountain Miners defeat C.R. Tunes to claim their first CVBL title in 24 years. Chris Burdo has 3 hits with a homer for the Mudhens.
Tom Broderick scores in the third overtime to give Lake Placid a 3-2 win over Chazy Giroux's in the North Country Men's Soccer final. P.J. Rabice and Mike Navarro score for Lake Placid while Chris Demers and Jason Fenner connect for Chazy.
20 YEARS AGO (1989) Tim Jolin shoots a 71 to win the First Craig Chisum Memorial Golf Tournament in Malone. Willie King beats Jim Andre in a playoff for the pro title.
Beaner Roberts, Debbie Luff, Kathy Young, Maureen Carter and Lola Meseck lead City Korina to a 6-5 win over the Lady Dukes in the deciding game of the Women's City Softball League championship series.
Steve Criss belts 2 homers and knocks in 5 runs and Tim Drollette collects 5 hits as Redford sweeps past Altona into the CVBL finals. Don Duprey has 4 hits and 5 RBI as Peru finishes off Saranac Lake.
25 YEARS AGO (1984) Anita Varga and Linda Friedlander win the women's doubles while Randy Quayle and Roger Neill claim the men's title in the Press-Republican North Country tennis tournament.
Todd West gets 2 hits, including a 2-run double, and sparkles in relief as Merkel's sweeps past Kennedy-Copeland to the City Babe Ruth title.
Willsboro's Cammy Myler, a Winter Games gold-medalist in luge, adds a gold in team kayak at the Empire State Summer Games. Peter Davis, Gary Kucipek, Mike Stone, Marc Gosselin, Scott Purdy, Jim Willauer, Dana Woitasek, Eileen Wardner and Bunny Adler also claim gold medals for the North Country.
Tom Latinville no-hits the Redford River Rats in the Adirondack Slo-Pitch Softball League playoffs.
30 YEARS AGO (1979) Mineville's Jack Hargett gets 9 wins in four days of harness racing at the Essex County Fair.
Carla Laporte's two-out single scores the winning run as The Rook beats Bill Santa Pontiac 6-5 to win the In-City Women's Softball League crown.
Gary Boulrice's 3-run homer sends the Rouses Point Softball Club on to a series-clinching victory over Barcomb's TV in the Lake Champlain Slow-Pitch League playoffs.
Kevin Gallagher and Charlie Decker each get 2 hits as Mark's Bar beats Isabella's 4-3 to wrap up the Black Fly Slo-Pitch League title.
Louanne Roberts, Lisa Bechard, Sue Favreau and Kim Bailey are the hitting stars as Stable Lawn & Garden beats Champlain to wrap up the Little Towns Women's Softball League crown.
40 YEARS AGO (1969) Tim Snow knocks in 4 runs and Les Fessette tosses a 3-hit shutout as The Riverside Hotel beats Keeseville 5-0 to claim the AuSable Forks Fast-Pitch Softball League crown.
Post 20 defeats Bath 9-4 to win the New York State American Legion junior baseball title. The Plattsburgh team advances to the New England regionals where it defeats Bennington, Vt., but loses to Naugatuck, Conn., 5-0, and Central Falls, R.I., 7-3.
Joe Jastrab retires as Plattsburgh State basketball coach with a 16-year record of 215-120.
Sandra Carlo successfully defends her state title at the New York State Barebow Women's Archery Championships.
Pete Sindo raps a 3-run homer and strikes out 12 to lead Kennedy-Copeland to the City Babe Ruth title.
50 YEARS AGO (1959) Allan Corron is the pitching and hitting standout as the Beekmantown peewees win the Div. II crown in a playoff with Rouses Point.
Butch Gebo of Merkel's pitches the first no-hitter of the American Babe Ruth season.
Jerry Smith's triple scores Jim Cruickshank with the winning run in the bottom of the 11th as Crown Point hands Port Henry its first loss in 3 years.
Sandra Brushnefski and Barbara Carle lead Chazy to the team title in the Clinton County Swimkhana.
60 YEARS AGO (1949) Benny Jock tosses a 5-hitter with 19 strikeouts in a 5-1 AuSable Forks victory over Rouses Point.
John Flynn resigns after 9 years as St. John's athletic director.
Walt Benware hurls Bloomingdale past the previously unbeaten Plattsburgh Genesees 7-3.
Phil Soper, Jr. completes 6 miles in 5:03 minutes to win the season finale at Moffitt Speedway.
70 YEARS AGO (1939) County Clerk William Paquette pulls an 18-pound, 3-ounce musky from the Great Chazy River.
Ray Pinelli of the Malone Maroons leads the Northern League with a .384 batting average.
Former city champ Allen Booth beats rising star Gerald Rock 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 in the YMCA tennis semifinals.
