Looking Back (June 8-14)
10 YEARS AGO (1999) Seton Catholic's Jason Jabaut (1,600), PHS's Dominick Richmond (400), Tupper Lake's Dave Bedore (shot put) and the Peru 1,600-meter relay team of Dustin Tyo, Chris Henderson, Ryan Wrisley and Shane Connor win state championships in track & field.
Nick Damiani gets 2 hits and Derrick Bezio delivers a key 2-out, 2-run single in Peru's 9-7 win over Ogdensburg in regional baseball. The Indians then fall to Vernon-Verona-Sherrill 3-1 in the quarterfinals.
Josh Java knocks in 5 runs with 3 hits and Billy Orr pitches a 4-hitter as Moriah whips Hermon-DeKalb 16-1. Salem eliminates the Vikings in the quarterfinals.
Jenny Manabat pitches a 3-hitter while Jaja Cabalit gets 3 infield hits and 5 stolen bases as PHS beats Gouverneur 5-2 to reach the second round of the state softball playoffs for the first time. The Hornets then score 4 in the 7th, but fall short, losing to South Glens Falls 5-4.
Gayle Peryea pitches a 2-hitter with 10 strikeouts and Melanie and Nikki Lopez turn in defensive gems as AuSable Valley downs Potsdam 4-1. The Patriots outhit Duanesburg 5-2, but lose 3-2 in the quarterfinals.
20 YEARS AGO (1989) Rob Scoskie goes 4-for-4 and Jason Miller pitches 4 innings of scoreless relief as PHS captures the state Class B championship in baseball with a 5-4 win over Levittown. Tom Maston hurls two gems to get the Hornets to the final, beating Port Chester 7-3 in the semis with a 2-hitter and Mexico 7-0 in the quarterfinals with a 3-hit shutout. Andy Starr, Mike Poveda and Miller hit home runs in the win over Mexico.
Four-time state champ Ardsley holds off Northern Adirondack to win the Class C crown, 7-6. Steven Peryea has 3 hits for the Bobcats. Chris Pageau is the big hitter for NAC in wins over Whitehall (3-1) and Norwood-Norfolk (10-6) while Eric Gibson shuts down Whitehall.
Malone's Chad Lawrence places fifth in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 9:21.6 at the state track meet.
Eighth-grader Jackie LaFreniere's one-out single in the 8th scores Cristy Belair to lift NAC to a 5-4 win over Lake George. The Bobcats fall to Deposit 8-1 in the state semifinals.
25 YEARS AGO (1984) The Montreal Expos pickw Jeff Doorey of Peru and Baldwin-Wallace and Todd Wilkinson of PHS and North Carolina in the annual baseball player draft.
Chuck Dumas, Darryl McDonough and Jay Dumas lead Keene to an 8-1 win over Newcomb, giving the Beavers their 3rd straight Section VII Class D2 baseball banner.
Mickey Shaughnessy, David Clark and Greg Beck belt homers as Schroon Lake whips Dannemora 22-8 to win the MVAC baseball title.
Sandy LaFountain's 3-run triple gives NAC a 16-10 win over Peru in the CVAC softball final.
30 YEARS AGO (1979) Leslie Egglefield drives in 7 runs and Pam Crowningshield collects 4 hits as Elizabethtown-Lewis wraps up its second straight Class D softball title with a 17-4 win over Newcomb. Gina Yandon homers for the Huskies.
Dave Lee and Tim Lee lead Willsboro to a 6-4 win over Lake Placid in a playoff for the MVAC golf title.
Danny Mayo bests Tim Bond as MAI edges Saranac 3-2 to win the Class A baseball crown. John Flynn and Tony Healey execute 2 successful pickoff plays in the Mountie win.
Kevin Morrow singles in the winning run in the seventh and sophomore lefty Pat Chase strikes out 9 as NAC beats AuSable Valley 5-4 to win the Class B title.
Ricky Bailey's 3-run triple is the big blow in Crown Point's 13-4 win over Elizabethtown-Lewis in the Class C final while Steve Parslow pitches a one-hitter as Wells beats Newcomb 7-2 for the Class D crown.
40 YEARS AGO (1969) Pip LaFountain pitches a 2-hitter with 14 strikeouts in Dannemora's 7-0 win over Lyon Mountain in the CCIL playoffs and 2 days later, no-hits Crown Point to win the Class B title for the Knights. LaFountain comes back later in the week to throw another 2-hitter, but Ellenburg prevails 3-0 to win its first CCIL title in 14 years. John Shutts' RBI triple and Roger Peets' RBI single are the only hits for the Eagles.
Winning pitcher Chuck Dragoon gets 2 hits and shortstop Harold Bleau rips a triple and makes 2 outstanding plays in the field to lead PHS to a 4-1 win over Ellenburg for the Section VII Class A crown.
John Doctor shoots a one-over-par 73 to win the Second-Annual Chet Taylor Memorial at Bluff Point.
50 YEARS AGO (1959) Plattsburgh High's Billy Benson finishes third in the mile at the state track meet with a school-record time of 4:27.5.
Henry Briquer, coming off a 1-hit shutout of PHS, scatters 6 hits as Saranac edges Mineville 3-2 for the Class A baseball crown. Charlie Turek pitches a 4-hitter in a losing cause.
Francis Shusda gets 4 hits, including the game-winning RBI single, and picks up the win in relief as Lyon Mountain edges Crown Point 5-4 for the Class B title.
Alan Barnum pitches a 5-hitter and Roland Malbon gets a double and 2 singles as Moriah defeats Altona 12-3 in the Class C final.
60 YEARS AGO (1949) PHS's Tony Pope wins the 100-yard dash in 10.0 seconds and the broad jump with a leap of 20 feet, 1 inch in intersectional track competition against Section II.
70 YEARS AGO (1939) The Plattsburgh Majors beat Saranac Lake 7-6 before a crowd of 3,729 at the Northern League opener. Bill Barrett homers for the Majors while Red Gendron belts a homer for the Red Sox. Pickles Proctor, a 15-year-old freshman at St. John's, begins his fifth season as bat boy for the Majors.
Lake Placid is one of three sites to turn down an IOC request to host the 1940 Winter Olympics after St. Moritz, Switz. refuses to host the Games over a skiing dispute. Lake Placid officials cite the short notice in declining the offer.
