10 YEARS AGO (1999)
Bruce Kennedy of Peru and Chad Kennedy of Lake Placid win their class in the 70-mile Gen. Clinton Canoe Regatta in the Southern Tier.
Dustin Judd works out of a bases-loaded jam in the last of the 7th as Peru beats defending champion PHS 5-3 to win the Class B baseball crown. Adam Felio and Paul Bruno each get 2 hits while Chris Burdo and Adam Whitbeck belt homers for PHS.
Jeff Rock's 2-run single in the bottom of the seventh caps NAC's comeback in an 8-7 win over Tupper Lake for the Class C title. Mark Burdo and Brian Shutts deliver key RBI singles for the Bobcats. Ed Larkin has 2 hits for the Lumberjacks.
20 YEARS AGO (1989)
Chris Peets wins at No. 3 singles while the doubles teams of Rob Carey and Eric Duteau, and Mike Murphy and Travis Carey sweep, giving NCCS a 3-2 win over PHS and the CVAC tennis title.
Sophomore John Blades hurls Elizabethtown-Lewis past Bolton 17-3 for the Section VII Class D baseball title. He helps his cause with 3 hits while Scott Gentles, Dave Martin and Chad Montville chip in with 2 hits apiece.
Melanie Andrews pitches a no-hitter and helps her cause with a homer and a single as Malone beats Massena 5-3 to claim its first Class B crown in softball.
Michelle Rocheleau and Angel Bruce get 3 hits each as Peru defeats NCCS 18-7 to win the Section VII Class B softball title.
25 YEARS AGO (1984)
Tom Brown and Rich Gottschall win in singles while John Garrant Ron Cao-Ba, Steve Zukowski and Mike Gillett sweep doubles, enabling PHS to defeat NCCS 4-1 and end the Cougars' 57-match winning streak in tennis.
Bill LeBeau pitches a 4-hitter with 13 strikeouts to lead PHS to a 5-0 win over Peru for the Class B baseball crown. Greg Polhemus raps out 3 hits and Rob Calkins comes through with a 2-run single.
Darren Utzler's 3-run double in the sixth gives Saranac a 5-2 win over St. John's for the Class C title. Chris King clubs a homer for the Irish.
30 YEARS AGO (1979)
Kit Cieri shoots a 76 and Randy McMaster, an 80, to lead PHS to a 21-stroke victory in the Section VII golf championships at Craig Wood.
Art Collins pitches a 4-hitter with 11 strikeouts as Peru beats NAC 4-2 in the CVAC final.
Freshman Don Gray's RBI single in the seventh gives Crown Point a 4-3 win over Schroon Lake and the MVAC championship. Winning pitcher Tim Greene pitches a 3-hitter with 8 strikeouts.
40 YEARS AGO (1969)
Tom Juneau shoots an 84 at Craig Wood to lead Champlain to a 4-stroke victory over Moriah for the Section VII golf title. Earl Vance, Bob Manigold, Bob Moran and Mike Collins round out the winning team. Westport's Jim Forcier cards an 82 to win medalist honors for the second year in a row.
Tim Titus contributes a 2-run single and Dave Towne an RBI single in the seventh as Crown Point beats Westport 4-3 to wrap up the MVL baseball crown.
Former Peru standouts Leon Angevine and Paul "Scooter'' Giroux sign professional contracts — Angevine with the NFL Eagles and Giroux with baseball's Pirates.
Frank Rooney allows only one hit, but Ellenburg beats Peru 1-0 with an unearned run. Bob Rushford only gives up 2 hits for Ellenburg to get the win.
50 YEARS AGO (1959)
Ironman Jerry Welch pitches the entire 15 innings of a 2-1, 4-3 St. John's doubleheader sweep of PHS in baseball. John Poissant hits a home run for the Irish.
Freshman Frank Colvin gets the win in relief as Elizabethtown beats Westport 12-5 to snap the Eagles' 33-game winning streak in MVL sports. Blackmore, Cassavaugh and Mitchell each get 2 hits for E'town.
Larry Rabatoy and Joe Fitzgerald get 2 hits apiece to lead AuSable Forks to a 9-8 win over Peru and the Southern Division title.
Charlie Turek's 2-run triple is the big blow as Mineville wraps up the Essex County League pennant with a 9-6 win over Port Henry.
Henry Briquer pitches a one-hitter and Dick Terry comes through with 2 doubles and a single in Saranac's 6-0 win over PHS.
60 YEARS AGO (1949)
Les Coulombe pitches a no-hitter and his third straight shutout as Champlain tops Lyon Mountain 1-0. Yakey gets 2 hits for Champlain.
Bob St. Germaine pitches a 5-inning no-hitter to lead Morrisonville over St. Mary's of Champlain 12-0.
Bob Murphy celebrates his birthday with a 3-run triple and stellar play in left field as St. John's downs MAI 7-4.
Freshman Warren Munson wins the shot put in a surprise with a toss of 45 feet, 3 inches and Bob Gendron and Tony Pope each claim 3 firsts to lead PHS to its fourth straight Section VII track title.
70 YEARS AGO (1939)
Catanzerita (100, 220), Plonka (880), L. Smith (mile), Selesky (pole vault) and Turevich (shot put) lead Mineville to victory in a track & field invitational.
Alonzo LaValley strikes out 13 as the Rouses Point Texaco Stars thump Dannemora 13-2.
