10 YEARS AGO (1998)
Plattsburgh State sophomore Chris Verkey wins the NCAA Div. III 400-meter intermediate hurdles in 51.62 seconds.
Plattsburgh's Jonathan Lutinski and NAC's Kristen Ross are Section VII tennis singles champions while Saranac's Josh Bowen and Mike Stone and Seton Catholic's Adeline Guay and Jessica Chagnon win in doubles.
Gary Salmon and Johanna Evans each claim four firsts to lead Peru to a sweep of the CVAC Div. I titles in track & field.
Four-time winners Andrea Staepel, Krissi Bianchine and Johanna Fitch lead Ticonderoga to a repeat in Div. II girls while Charlie Martin, Dan Fahl and Chris Moore spark Saranac Lake to an upset of previously unbeaten Tupper Lake, leaving the two tied with Ticonderoga for the boys' crown.
Tupper Lake's Andrew Svoboda puts together rounds of 68 and 78 for a two-day score of 146 at Westport to win the Section VII golf championship by 13 strokes.
20 YEARS AGO (1988)
Art Graves wins the 3,200 run as Peru nips PHS 67-65 to win its second straight CVAC boys' track title.
Peru overcomes Mike Zurlo's 39 in the rain at Bluff Point to finish the CVAC golf season at 8-0. Tom Provost and Bob Mihal shoot 40s for Peru while Brian McGovern finishes the season unbeaten.
Jodi Van Schaick, Kerry Melville, Sue Bergh, Tina Peryea, Angie Dumas and Ann LaVeck lead the Malone girls to the championship in the Van Dusen Invitational track & field meet.
Lara Froehlich, Jen Goette and Marie Barber each take 3 firsts as Peru completes its season unbeaten and claims its first girls' track title in 10 years.
Dean Gough raps out 3 hits and Elizabethtown-Lewis claims the MVAC North title with a 7-6 win over Crown Point. Bill Cook belts a 2-run homer for the Panthers.
