10 YEARS AGO (1998)
Matt Duquette pitches a one-hitter with 16 strikeouts and helps his cause with 3 hits, including 2 triples, as PHS beats Beekmantown 5-0. Aaron Retherford's first-inning single is the Eagles' only hit.
Lacey Hutchins hammers 2 home runs, including a grand slam, to power Westport to a 28-25 win over Crown Point in softball. Janelle Firlik homers for the Panthers.
Shana Fessette pitches a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts and Chesney Penfield gets 3 hits in Beekmantown's win over Moriah. Meghan Donahue belts a homer for the Eagles.
Andrea Staepel rallies to win the 3,200-meter relay for Ticonderoga to set the tempo for the Sentinels' 74-58 victory that avenges a big loss to PHS in their last meeting in girls' track & field. Krissi Bianchine, Sherri Ott and Mindy Burgey also star for the Sentinels.
20 YEARS AGO (1988)
Kathy Brandell Champagne overcomes a cramp in her side at the 23-mile mark to finish 40th out of 207 runners in the U.S. Olympic Marathon trial for women in Pittsburgh. She finishes in 2 hours, 43 minutes.
Sophomore Mark Kiroy, making his first varsity start, tosses a 4-hitter and belts a 2-run homer to lead Saranac past Ticonderoga 6-0. Left-fielder Jimmy Ryan throws out a runner at home to preserve the shutout.
Malone's state-ranked distance aces Jeff Mulverhill and Chad Lawrence lead the Huskies to a track win over Salmon River.
Former Saranac standout Kellie Briquer collects 7 hits in North Country Community College's doubleheader sweep of Jefferson CC in softball.
Eighth-grader Kristy Allen and freshman Krista Allen combine for 4 firsts while sprinter Kassy McIntyre gets 3 firsts in AuSable Valley's 72-60 win over PHS in track & field.
25 YEARS AGO (1983)
Basketball standout Paul Glodis and soccer star Mary Lou Philbrook are honored as Plattsburgh State Athletes of the Year.
Paul LaRock fans 15 and adds an RBI double in Beekmantown's 3-2 win over Saranac. Steve Criss chips in with a triple and a single.
Former Elizabethtown and Cortland soccer star Fred Hooper is named men's soccer coach at Plattsburgh State, succeeding Uwe Meyer who resigned.
Marion Stone, Charlene VanWeort, Sheila Rock, Mona Stone and Doris Leazott, bowling for Twin State Telephone, post a 3,244 score to win the women's division of the E. Perry Ladd Memorial Tournament at North Bowl.
30 YEARS AGO (1978)
Tom Arre wins the high jump (6-foot-3) and Mike Harrell captures the two-mile run (10:14.5) to lead MAI to victory in the CVAC Early Bird track meet. Steve Downs sweeps the dashes for the Mounties.
John Flynn pitches a 2-hitter with 10 strikeouts while Tony Healey and Jeff Bouyea are the hitting stars for MAI in a 12-4 win over Northern Adirondack.
Ken Recore pitches a 2-hitter and Billy Marshall knocks in 2 runs in Dannemora's 6-2 win over Elizabethtown-Lewis.
The Plattsburgh Piranhas present Theresa Mannix with the Coaches Award for her success in swimming and volunteer work with the novice club members.

40 YEARS AGO (1968)
John Carpenter pitches a 4-hitter to lead St. John's to a 5-0 victory over Plattsburgh High.
Winning pitcher Rich Evans strikes out 13 and helps his cause with a 2-run single as Crown Point defeats Elizabethtown-Lewis 11-1.
Pip LaFountain tosses a 2-hitter with 15 strikeouts in Dannemora's 8-4 victory over St. Mary's of Champlain.
50 YEARS AGO (1958)
Carl King pitches a 4-hitter with 9 strikeouts to lead PHS to its first win (5-2) over MAI in baseball in four years. Bobby Stevenson and Bobby Silver each contribute 2 hits to the Hornets' cause while Bruin Polhemus has a pair for MAI.
Dick Waldron and John Henry combine on a no-hitter in Port Henry's win over Moriah. Waldron strikes out 11 in 6 innings. Larry Williams drives in 3 runs and Mike Lambert has 2 RBI.
A two-out, pinch-hit single in the ninth ends Lefty Tessier's bid for a no-hitter over Middlebury. Tessier strikes out 16 for St. Michael's College.
Larry Briquer and the Saranac Chiefs best Chazy and Donald Brothers, 2-0, in a battle of 2-hit pitching gems.

60 YEARS AGO (1948)
George Demary goes 8-for-10 for the weekend to help MAI sweep St. Joseph's of Malone and St. Anne's of Swanton, Vt. in baseball.
Chet Cleland pitches a 3-hitter with 14 strikeouts in Plattsburgh High's win over Elizabethtown while George Dyer tosses a 3-hitter with 10 strikeouts in St. John's victory over Peru.
Altona's Bob Garrow hurls a one-hitter with 17 strikeouts against St. Mary's of Champlain and Nelson Delorme pitches a one-hitter with 16 strikeouts in Morrisonville's victory over Champlain.
Bob Bruno belts a 2-run homer and winning pitcher Bob Rock scores the deciding run in Peru's 5-4 win over Ellenburg.
Roscoe Marshall (1,704), Mickey Caplan (1,669) and Walt Brault (1,657) post the top all-events scores for Red's Imperials of Plattsburgh in the American Bowling Congress tournament in Detroit.
70 YEARS AGO (1938)
Anthony Thomas, former coach at MAI and of the Guy's Ice Cream team, is named baseball coach of St. John's Academy.
