Looking Back (April 8-14)

10 YEARS AGO (1998)

Former Beekmantown standout Doug Kimbler will play baseball for the Adirondack Lumberjacks of the Northeast League of Professional Baseball.

Champlain Valley Athletic Conference basketball coaches select a Father-Son combination for its top honors. Tupper Lake's Steve Skiff is named Coach of the Year while his son, Chris, is tabbed as the Player of the Year after leading the Lumberjacks in scoring (18.9 points per game) and assists (7.3 average).

Gretchen Morris fires a 3-hitter with 10 strikeouts and only one walk and Danielle Waldron doubles in the only run as Plattsburgh High defeats Fort Ann 1-0 in a non-conference softball game.

Beekmantown's Geoff Bosworth outduels Saranac's Pat Buckley for a 1-0 victory on opening day in CVAC baseball. Bosworth gives up just three hits while striking out nine and walking while Buckley allows just two hits with nine strikeouts and two walks. The run is unearned.

Ticonderoga's Britt Huntington and AuSable Valley's Gayle Peryea pitch opening-day shutouts in CVAC softball. Huntington yields two hits with 10 strikeouts and Peryea whiffs 13 while giving up just one hit.

20 YEARS AGO (1988)

Andy Dumas, the all-time leading scorer at Keene Central with 1,576 points, agrees to join Larry Cowan's first recruiting class at Plattsburgh State after a fine career at Champlain College.

Clinton Community College Coach Tom Lacey lands Chateaugay standout Kevin Burke, who is named MVP of Division II of the Northern Athletic Conference after averaging 21 points and 8 rebounds a game for the Bulldogs.

Plattsburgh State's Donna Dixon, a First Team All-SUNYAC, is one of 20 players named to the New York State Women's All-Star Team in basketball.

Schroon Lake's John Becker strikes out 15 and gives up one hit in a 9-0 drubbing of Minerva in baseball. Jack Hargett has a double for the Wildcats.

Michelle Hargett knocks in 8 runs with 8 hits for the day in leading North Country Community College to a sweep of Clinton CC in softball. Meg Schneider has 5 hits and 8 RBI for the Cougars.

25 YEARS AGO (1983)

Celine Cable defeats Shirley Butler, 6-2, 6-2, to win the Women's Class A championship in the Spring Time Singles Tennis Tournament at the Plattsburgh Racquet Club. Leslie Slee wins Class B while Tom Brown takes the high-school boys' division.
