Section sends 4 to state semis
10 Section VII grapplers win opening-round matches

ALBANY — Section VII, led by a trio of Peru lightweights, more than held its own Friday during first-day action in the NYSPHSAA Division II Wrestling Championships being held at the Times-Union Center.

Section VII had 10 of its wrestlers win their opening-round matches and four of them won twice on the day to advance to today's semifinal round.

"I thought the section did a good job," said Peru co-head coach Mike Hogan. "Usually, we make hay in the wrestlebacks, but we did a better job early on today.

"We were able to get three of our wrestlers into the semifinals and Saranac also had a very good day as all five of their wrestlers won at least one match, with one of them getting to the semifinals."

Peru's Jacob Goddeau (96), Arik Robinson (103) and Patrick Hogan (119), along with Saranac's Tyler Leavine (215), battled their way into the semis.

Goddeau edged out a 3-2 win over Section V's Jeff Olena in the opening round and followed that up with a 5-2 victory over Section II's Brendon Goldup in the quarterfinals.

Robinson had his hands full in a 2-1 decision over Section V's Austin Keough in the first round and then won by fall in 1:12 over Section I's Anthony Calvano in the quarterfinals.

Hogan pinned Section V's Tyler Marlow in 4:59 in the opening round and then posted an 11-1 major decision over Section XI's Greg Lavazoli in the quarterfinals.

"Jake was losing, 2-0, in his first match with 30 seconds to go and turned his opponent to win," Mike Hogan said.

"And, Arik had a real tough kid in his opening match, who rode him for four minutes. Arik then pinned his next opponent for his 100th-career win."

Patrick Hogan's opening-round match had a shocking turn of events.

"The kid Patrick was wrestling (Marlow) took first in the state at 103 two years ago and was third in the state last year at 112," Mike Hogan said. "Patrick was losing, 13-2, and getting his butt kicked.

"Patrick wrestles Greco-Roman during the summer and that helped him today. The kid let Patrick up and I think he was looking to win by technical fall. But, Patrick got him in a head lock and pinned him."

Leavine won by fall in 3:46 over Section VIII's Kivanc Tiyaloglu in his first match and recorded a 3-0 decision over Section X's Darren Fuller to move into the semifinals.

"Leavine did a heck of a job," Mike Hogan said. "All the Saranac wrestlers did a good job."

Three other local wrestlers are still alive. They include: Peru's Troy Seymour with a 2-1 record at 112; Saranac's Dakota Smart, 2-1, at 140; and Northern Adirondack's James Charland, 2-1, at 152.

"Charland lost a match to a tough kid, got hurt and had to go to the hospital," Mike Hogan said. "Then, he comes back and pins his opponent in the wrestlebacks. That shows how tough he is."

Beekmantown's Kyle Burdick (125), Saranac's Ryan Guynup (130), Beekmantown's Koby Barcomb (135), Beekmantown's Andy Anderson (145), Saranac's Adam Ahern (189) and Saranac's Mitchell LeFevre (285) all compiled 1-2 records and were eliminiated.

Beekmantown's Nick Bushey (160) and AuSable Valley's John Dukett (171) were also eliminated after going 0-2.

Section V is currently in first place in the team standings with 127.5 points. Section VII is sixth with 60.5.

Today's semifinals are set to begin at 10 a.m. There will be wrestlebacks throughout the day, with the championship matches starting at 6 p.m.
