B'town reaches volleyball final

BEEKMANTOWN -- The Beekmantown Eagles are looking more and more like a team determined to establish a long reign in girls' volleyball.

There is no denying the team's considerable edge in experience this season, but it is also easy to overlook the contributions of the underclassmen to what so far has been a perfect run.

Sophomore Krysten Kotowski had an outstanding game behind the line for Beekmantown (17-0) Tuesday in a 3-0 sweep of AuSable Valley in the Section VII Class B semifinals. The Eagles won 25-16, 25-14, 25-17 to advance to Saturday's championship at Plattsburgh State against the winner of tonight's Saranac at PHS match. Beekmantown is the defending Class B champion.

Kotowski served 15 points with four aces and she also came up with three kills and 10 digs. In fact, the five sophomores and freshman Steph Clookey accounted for 25 of Beekmantown's 44 points garnered on offense. Add junior Brittany Lapham, who served nine points and came up with 27 assists, and it's little wonder Eagle fans are talking dynasty.

Granted, Beekmantown will lose two outstanding players in seniors Rosi Cummings and Kelley Lucia, but the Eagles still seem in good hands for the future.

Cummings again showing why she's the top player around had 12 kills with three blocks Tuesday to go with 16 digs and nine points and two aces. Lucia chipped in with six kills and six digs.

AuSable Valley (9-9) was led by Shiloh Bourgeois (5 kills, 8 digs), Alex Hoey (4 points, 3 aces, 10 digs), Amanda Hamilton (12 assists) and Emily Miller (6 points, 3 kills, 3 blocks).

The Patriots, who enjoyed their most successful season in years, also see a bright future with only one senior on the team.
