MINERVA — So much for missing their starting center and three other players who left early Tuesday on a French Club trip to Paris.

Indian Lake/Long Lake shot out to a 17-2 lead an went on to defeat Schroon Lake 36-30 to win the Minerva/Newcomb girls' Thanksgiving basketball tournament.

The Wildcats made a late run, but never got closer than four points.

"I was really proud of our defense," Indian Lake/Long Lake Coach John Reynolds said. "We came out hard in a man-to-man defense. We paid a toll in the second half when we lost our legs and missed some good looks. But credit Schroon Lake's defense; their zone slowed us down."

Carli Reynolds scored 20 points to lead the Orange to victory while Melanie Pierson grabbed 12 rebounds and Murphy Farrell came up with four assists and four steals.

"Melanie played tough defense and was strong on the boards for us," Reynolds noted. "And Carli and Murphy were both named to the all-tournament team."

Indian Lake/Long Lake led 24-8 at the break, but Schroon Lake made a charge in the second half. Liz Hamden hit a jumper with three minutes to break Schroon Lake's momentum and Reynolds nailed a basket and two free throws in the waning minutes to seal the verdict.

Mindy Whitty scored 17 points and Jocelyn Bowen, 13, to lead Schroon Lake.

Whitty also was named to the all-tournament team, along with Kelsey Williford of Johnsburg and Deidra Palmatier of Minerva/Newcomb.
