9 from North Country earn All-State honors

PLATTSBURGH — Three athletes from Section VII and six from Section X have been named to the 2008-2009 New York State Sports Writers Association All-State for girls' basketball.
Section VII winners included JohniRae Coryea of Northeastern Clinton and Kara Hackett of Peru in Class B, and Emma Nye of Keene in Class D.
Section X winners included Kelsey Johnson of Malone in Class A, Beth Keniston from Tupper Lake, and Candy Dufrane of Brushton-Moira in Class C, Aubrie Dunn of Hammond, Katie Hamelin of Chateaugay and Krista Lucas of St. Regis Falls in Class D.
SECTION VII JohniRae Coryea, Northeastern Clinton — Coryea, a senior guard, landed on the seventh team in Class B. She had 120 field goals and 58 free throws for 327 points on the season in leading her team to the Section VII Class B title and a berth in the NYSPHSAA Final Four at Hudson Valley Community College. Coryea averaged 13 points a game and drained 29 3-point baskets on the season.
Kara Hackett, Peru — Hackett, a senior forward, was chosen for the eighth team in Class B. She made 142 field goals and 107 free throws for 395 points on the season. She scored 17.1 points-per game and was named the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Most Valuable Player for 2008-2009.
Emma Nye, Keene — Nye, a junior guard, was selected to the seventh team in Class D. Nye was a strong player all season, leading the area in scoring with 19.8 points per game. She made 138 field goals and 68 free throws for 377 points. Nye also finished the season with 34 3-point baskets.
SECTION X Kelsey Johnson, Malone — Johnson, a junior center, was selected to the 10th team in Class A. Johnson had 106 field goals, 32 free throws for 250 points on the season. She averaged 11.9 points per game on the season.
Beth Keniston, Tupper Lake — Keniston, a senior guard, was selected to the eighth team in Class C. Keniston made 86 field goals and 30 free throws for 225 points. She averaged 10.7 points per game and made 23 3-point baskets.
Candy Dufrane, Brushton-Moira — Dufrane, a senior center, was selected to the seventh team in Class C. She had 130 field goals and 40 free throws for 326 points on the season. She averaged 15.5 points pergame and made 26 3-pointers in 21 games.
Aubrie Dunn, Hammond — Dunn, a senior center and veteran of two state championship teams, was selected to the third team in Class D. Dunn helped her team reach the NYSPHSAA Final Four at Hudson Valley. She had 126 field goals and 79 free throws for 337 points on the season. She averaged 12.5 points per game in 27 games.
Katie Hamelin, Chateaugay — Hamelin, a senior guard and all-state soccer standout, was selected to the fifth team in Class D. Hamelin finished the season with 192 points with 73 field goals and 27 free throws. She averaged 8.7 points per game in 22 games.
Krista Lucas, St. Regis Falls — Lucas, a junior guard, was selected to the sixth team in Class D. She made 100 field goals and 41 free throws for 306 points. She averaged 15.3 points per game and buried 65 3-point baskets in 20 games.
