You can look back over the last 70 years at some of the area athletes and personalities who made headlines in area sports. Flashback will revive memories of great local athletes and outstanding team successes.

ONEONTA — Brandon Laurin kicked the ball as hard as he could.

And, when it settled into the back of the net, the Chazy boys' soccer team was on its way to the fourth state championship in the program's history.

Laurin's penalty kick with just 2:21 left in the second half gave the Eagles a hard-earned 1-0 victory over Section II's Northville in the Class D championship contest Sunday at the National Soccer Hall of Fame Field.

"It doesn't get old," said Chazy coach Rob McAuliffe. "People are always asking me that. There's always a new group of kids playing and winning a state championship is special for the community.

"We had a tough loss in the finals last year and there was some question if we could get back because of all the young players on the team. I'm thrilled with the team — they believed they could do it."

The game's only goal came when a Northville player was called for a hand ball in the penalty area.

"It was a blatant hand ball and that's the way the game had been called all game long," McAuliffe said.

Laurin, a freshman, took the penalty kick and drilled a hard shot into the upper netting to the left of Northville's standout keeper Michael VanNostrand, who somehow managed to get a small piece of the ball on its way through.

"I was very nervous," said Laurin. "He's a good goalie — he made three saves in the penalty kick shootout yesterday. We watched him and he was especially good going to his right.

"I tried to hit is as hard as I could to his left and he still tipped it. If I didn't hit it as hard as I did, he might have made the save."

"There's no guarantee that you're going to make the penalty kick and we felt Brandon was the best option for us," McAuliffe said. "And, he wanted to take it."

The Section VII-champion and top-ranked Eagles (20-0-2), who rallied for a 2-1 win over Section III's Hamilton the day before, had their hands full against the Falcons (18-2-2), who defeated Section V's Belfast in penalty kicks on Saturday.

"It's the greatest feeling to win," Laurin said. "When we beat Hamilton yesterday, that gave us a lot of confidence. We knew we could win it if we played hard.

"But, they also had their chances on direct kicks and throw-ins."

"We played well, especially in the first half," McAuliffe said. "We were able to control more of the play and I felt we were the better team."

Following a relatively calm first half, things started to heat up in the final 40 minutes, with both teams having some quality chances to get on the scoreboard.

Chazy nearly scored 12 minutes into the half when a defender had to kick the ball out of harm's way with VanNostrand out of the play.

Then, following a Northville corner kick, Chazy keeper Austin Santor made a lunging save on a shot that was headed inside the near post with 16 minutes gone.

The Eagles then had a shot from close range go just wide of the net with 19 minutes remaining.

With 10 minutes remaining, a Northville free kick went just over the crossbar and the Falcons nearly scored off a scramble with 5:30 left.

The game was fragmented, however, with a lot of fouls called. The Eagles would have preferred more flow to it.

"That's not the way we wanted the game to be played," McAuliffe said. "They were big and physical. And, they were dangerous on free kicks and their long flip throw-ins."

Chazy finished with a 19-9 advantage in shots on goal, with Santor making seven saves and VanNostrand, 15.

"Shea Howley played a great game for us," McAuliffe said. "We had to move him back to sweeper after Nathan Reynolds got hurt against Hamilton and couldn't play today.

"Austin Santor came up with some big saves both days and was an unsung hero on the weekend. And, Kaleb Snide was chosen as the Final Four's Most Valuable Player."

Northville was looking for its first state championship in boys' soccer since 1995.
