Golf stars have Storm, Hornets accent



PLATTSBURGH -- The Section VII Golf All-Stars reflected the success of Saranac Lake and Plattsburgh High School with each school landing three athletes on the team. Plattsburgh High also earned the sportsmanship award. The Hornets, coached by Rusty Bigelow, organized a fundraiser for the family of Northeastern Clinton Coach Matt Fredette, whose son, Ben, is suffering from cancer.

The 2008 all-stars are:

SARANAC LAKE

Taras Gach -- Senior led the way for the Red Storm as he was 9-0-1 in the 2008 season and 19-0-1 overall for his career. He took part in the state tournament twice, finishing 11th in 2007 and tied for 17th this year. His other accomplishments include 2007 Individual Section VII Champion, lowest match average in the CVAC for 2007 and 2008, two-time CVAC all-star and state qualifier, 2008 MVP for Saranac Lake golf team and a fifth in 2007 at the Federation Golf Tournament.

Casey McHugh -- Senior was 42-8-1 in his career and 10-0 on the season. McHugh is a three-time CVAC all-star and state qualifier, and a three-time runner-up for Section VII individual honors. He was captain of the 2008 golf team, 2008 Red Letter winner, and 2008 fourth-place finisher for Section VII at Chisum tournament in Malone. McHugh finished tied for 67th in this year's state event.

Pat McHugh -- Freshman made a big impact for the Red Storm, going 9-1 this season to improve his career record to 25-4-1. McHugh also was a state qualifier and finished tied for 75th in states. He was also the 2008 Section VII Individual Champion.

PLATTSBURGH HIGH

Ryan Kirkpatrick -- Senior finished 8-2 on the season and ended his career 24-6. He was a three-year varsity starter, Bluff Point Junior Champion in 2006 and Elks Tournament Champion 2007. He participated in the NENY PGA Junior Tour. Kirkpatrick competed in states twice and finished tied for 79th this year.

Ethan Votraw -- Eighth-grader had a stellar season, going 7-3 for the season to raise his career record to 14-4. Votraw was a two-year varsity starter and qualified for states this year, finishing tied for 88th.

Alex Pierce -- Junior had a match record of 7-2-1 for the season and is 23-5-2 for his career. He is a three-year varsity starter and a veteran of two state tournaments, finishing tied for 88th this spring. He was the Bluff Point Junior Champion in 2007.

Northeastern Clinton

Cody O'Brian -- Junior finished his 2008 season with a 6-4 record and is 33-6-1 for his career. He qualified for states for the first time and finished tied for 79th.

Stephen Young -- Senior finished season 7-3 and his career 21-9. He participated in states twice and finished in 95th place this past season.
