ITHACA -- Saranac Lake's Taras Gach made the biggest noise for Section VII at Sunday's opening round in the NYSPHSAA Golf Championships at Cornell University's Robert Trent Jones Golf Course.

Gach carded a 73 and is tied for seventh place, four strokes off the lead, following the first of two rounds. The second and final round will be held today.

Dominic Bozzelli, from McQuaid Jesuit High School, was medalist on the day with a 69, while three golfers are next at 70.

It was a seven-stroke dropoff from Gach to the next Section VII golfer, with Saranac Lake's Casey McHugh finishing with an 80.

Peru's Tyler Hoey carded an 83, while Plattsburgh High School teammates Alex Pierce and Ryan Kirkpatrick each turned in an 84.

Rounding out the Section VII contingent were Northeastern Clinton's Cody O'Brian with a round of 90, Saranac Lake's Pat McHugh with a 93 and Northeastern Clinton's Stephen Young at 94.
