Red Storm sails to golf title
SARANAC LAKE -- Four Plattsburgh High School golfers shot rounds of 41 or better Thursday afternoon.
It wasn't nearly enough, however.
All six Saranac Lake golfers carded rounds of 42 or better, including one with a 34 and two with 35s, as the Red Storm won the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference championship with a 5-1 victory over the Hornets at the Saranac Lake Golf Club.
"The kids were absolutely tremendous today," said Saranac Lake head coach Jim Hayden. "They beat a good Plattsburgh team that played well.
"We had all six of our golfers shoot 42 or better and I'm happy for the kids."
Freshman Pat McHugh led the way for the Red Storm (10-0) with a two-under par 34 for medalist honors. Just one stroke off the pace, with a one-under 35, were Taras Gach and Casey McHugh.
Cody Ecret added a 40, Michael Phelan a 41 and Dana Tarantelli a 42 for Saranac Lake. Casey McHugh, Pat McHugh, Gach, Ecret and Tarantelli all won their matches.
Ethan Votraw, Alex Pierce and Jordan Conroy all shot a 40 for the Hornets (8-1), with Conroy winning his match at No. 5. Ryan Kirkpatrick carded a 41 and Mark Pellerin a 43 for PHS.
