Champagne, Berube to make last run
Section VII distance aces to wrap up high-school careers in state meet

BUFFALO -- It will be the last hurrah this weekend for two of the most decorated runners in Section VII history.

Seton Catholic's Mary Kate Champagne and Ticonderoga's Lee Berube will close out their brilliant high-school careers in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association and New York State Federation track & field championships at the University of Buffalo.

Champagne and Berube both have an excellent chance to add to their impressive medal collection in cross country and track.

Champagne, a two-time state champion in cross country, is the defending Div. II champion in the 3,000 meters. She was second in the 3,000 in 2006.

She has the top time, by far, among Div. II runners and fourth, overall, in the state at 3,000 meters. She will be looking to better her third-place finish in the 2007 Federation 3,000.

Champagne also has the top time by 6 seconds in the 1,500 for Div. II and is third, overall.

Berube, a state champion in cross country last fall, was second in the Div. II 3,200-meter run in 2007 and third in 2006. He also a sixth in the 1,600 last spring and a third in the 3,200 relay in 2006.

Berube is entered in both the 1,600 and 3,200 this weekend, but his best hope lies in the 3,200 where he has the third fastest time among Div. II runners.

Several other Section VII athletes have a shot at a medal this weekend.

Saranac's Kristie Pageau returns in the pentathlon after finishing third last year and eighth in 2006. She qualified with 2,587 points, which is below her 2007 score of 2,693.

Ben Depo, also of Saranac, enters with the seventh-best score (2,902) in the pentathlon.

Northeastern Clinton's wunderkind, seventh-grader Molly Roush, has the fifth fastest time among Div. II girls for the 800 meters while Beekmantown's Eric Drollette is seeded sixth in the boys' 800.

Beekmantown's 4x100- and 4x400-meter relay teams are seeded fifth and eighth, respectively, while Josh Garren of Beekmantown has the eighth best time in the 400-meter hurdles.

Beekmantown's Kathryn McDuffie (shot put) and Ikeyanna Hamlin (discus) also rank among the top eight heading into the weekend.
