Mariners' pitching sharp in Utica

UTICA -- Clinton County Mariners head coach John Flynn knows what he has in Pat Shaughnessy and Nick Lamica.

And, Flynn is taking advantage of it.

The two pitchers both tossed two-hitters Saturday as unbeaten Clinton County (6-0) won its first two games in the Father's Day Classic with a 4-0 victory over Whitestown Post #1113 and then a 4-1 decision over Cumberland, R.I. Post.

The Mariners need a win over Parkhurst Post this morning at 10 a.m. to advance to the 1 p.m. tournament title game. Clinton County could still end up in the championship contest with a loss depending on how all the tie-breakers work.

Shaughnessy, against Whitestown, struck out four and walked one in going the distance for the shutout. Then, against, Cumberland, Lamica fanned 11 and walked three in going the route.

"We're going as far as Shaughnessy and Lamica will take us," said Flynn. "It's working out well so far."

Outfielders Lamica, Aaron Goldfarb and Alex LaFountain all made nice catches to help out Shaughnessy.

At the plate, Matt Leta rapped out three hits and drove in two runs, while Frank Buksa added two hits and a couple of RBI.

Clinton County scored two runs in the third and two more in the fifth.

Then, against Cumberland, the Mariners broke a 1-all tie with three runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead for good.

Shaughnessy drilled a long solo home run, Tory Bouyea added a triple and single, and Ryan Bishop a big two-out, two-run single to account for Clinton County's four hits.

"We had to check our attitude at the door in this game," Flynn said. "It was a real battle.

"But, we're playing with a lot of confidence right now. We're playing good defense and getting good pitching. We faced some real good pitching today and came away with two wins."
