Chazy wins on late goal

PLATTSBURGH — Lake Placid turned the tables on Chazy and kept the ball in the Eagles' end for long stretches during the second half Saturday.

But with one quick play at the other end, Chazy pulled ahead.

Caitlyn LaPier beat Lake Placid goalkeeper Elizabeth Leff one-on-one with 11:50 left to lift the Eagles to a 1-0 victory in the Section VII Class D girls' soccer championship game.

Chazy, which won its fifth straight title, will meet Chateaugay Nov. 14 in Plattsburgh with the winner heading to the NYSPHSAA final four.

LaPier said the high-scoring Eagles (19-0) feed off of their offense, and that was the case Saturday — it just took a while.

"Once we get our goals, it's like we're unstoppable," the sophomore forward said. "It's either usually me or Victoria (Reynolds) who has to get the first one, or Astrid (Kempainen), and then we all come together."

Chazy outshot the Blue Bombers 9-2 in the first half and controlled much of the play. But Lake Placid (10-9) put a hard shot on net in the opening minute of the second half and continued to spend significant time in its offensive end.

"We talked at halftime, we needed to put pressure on them in the middle of the field," Lake Placid coach Olaf Carlson said. "And I think we did that. We went to the ball, and we were creating more scoring opportunities.

"We just had a little bit of a breakdown, and they were quick and they jumped on our mistake."

The Eagles' first shot of the half came with around 16 minutes left from Amanda Kempainen, who had another great chance a couple minutes later.

The next time the Eagles came back down the field, LaPier took a pass from Reynolds, brought the ball in and, when Leff came out to play it, sent it past her into the left side of the net.

"I practice that with my sister; she's a goalie," LaPier said. "And I always try to keep in my head that I can do it, and I can't look at the goalie — I gotta go for my corners.

"I try to just block it all out and look at my corner."

The Eagles finished with a 13-6 edge in shots. Leff made several tough saves when Chazy was putting on lots of pressure in the first half, and she finished with 12.

Chazy keeper Katharine Tooke had six stops.

Eagles coach Karin Trombley said her team likes to play the ball to the outside, and Lake Placid made that difficult at times. Even in the first half, Trombley didn't think the Eagles were playing their style.

"I said, 'We know what they're capable of. We know what we have to do. Let's stop playing nervous panic ball and play our game,' " Trombley said.

"Do I think we played our best game? No. But we won, and that's all that matters."
