Vikings sink Peru gridders

PERU -- The Moriah defense had four sacks, two interceptions and two recovered fumbles as it led the unbeaten Vikings to a 26-0 victory over Peru Saturday afternoon.

Moriah's defense sacked Peru quarterback Rob Duquette four times for a total loss of 25 yards. Brennan Thierry had two interceptions, and Ron Schofield recovered one of the two Indian's fumbles.

"The run defense did a good job," Moriah head coach Don Tesar said. "We gave up some big plays in the passing game, but got good pressure on Peru's quarterback.

"Both of Thierry's interceptions were huge."

Moriah and Peru (3-3, 3-1) were stagnant through much of the first quarter, combining for just 17 totals yards.

Then the Vikings (6-0, 3-0) went 70 yards on 15 plays. Tyler Blaise ran 7 yards untouched on the right side for the score 46 seconds into the second quarter. Tyson Fernandez's extra point hit the left post and bounced out.

Mike Brassard, the usual kicker, was injured two weeks ago, leaving the duty to Fernandez.

Late in the second quarter, Peru's Conner Keleher intercepted a Blaise pass, and the Indians were set up at their own 29. Two plays later, David Raggone fumbled the ball after a 7-yard gain.

The Vikings had less than two minutes left in the quarter, and Blaise connected on a 20-yard pass to Ryan Huchro and a 17-yard pass to Thierry. With less than 10 seconds left, Fenandez attempted a 29-yard field goal, but it was blocked.

Blaise finished the day 3-of-6 for 53 yards and one interception. Blaise also ran for 53 yards on five attempts.

Moriah struck again at 9:16 in the third quarter. After Thierry intercepted Duquette for the first time, he set the Vikings up with great field position on the Indians' 17. Just two plays later, Jim Carlson went in from 6 yards out for the score. The two-point conversion failed.

"Thierry set us up to get us ahead by more than just six with the interception," Tesar said.

Moriah added 14 points in the fourth quarter. The Vikings started on their own 22 and moved 30 yards to the Peru 48 on six plays. The very next play, Carlson went down the right side for the score. Fernandez added the extra-point. Carlson finished the day with 22 carries for 116 yards.

"That was the big-break run we needed in the game," Tesar said.

Just 16 seconds later on the Indians' first play, Duquette was intercepted by Thierry at the Peru 30, and Thierry went untouched for the score. Fernandez notched the extra point at 7:18. Duquette finished the game 10-for-16 for 77 yards and two interceptions.
