PLATTSBURGH -- Hyped games don't always live up to expectations.

Saturday morning's Champlain Valley Athletic Conference girls' soccer showdown between Seton Catholic and Plattsburgh High School, who both entered the day unbeaten in league play, was everything as advertised, however.

Renee Egan's goal early in the first overtime broke a 2-all tie and helped send the Knights (14-1, 13-0) to a 4-2 victory over the Hornets (11-2-2, 11-1-1) on the turf at Plattsburgh High School.

Egan's game-winner, assisted by Anna Rabideau, came from in close at 1:21 into the first overtime. Kate Murnane then added an insurance goal, from Kaile Bushey, at 6:32, to complete the scorng.

"I'm unbelievably happy -- it was definitely our best game this year," said Seton Catholic head coach Sam Menton. "We knew going into the game it would be a challenge for us. I didn't know what to expect, but I knew they were just as talented as we are.

"It was a back-and-forth game, with great competition. I did, however, feel we controlled the tempo and were able to play our game."

Egan had two goals and an assist to lead the way for the Knights.

"I've seen Egan play three times and today she was the difference maker for them," said PHS head coach Tim Mulligan. "She made some penetrating runs that put pressure on our defense.

"Seton is a very talented team and they were able to beat us today."

The Knights got off to a great start when Alexis Bushey scored from Egan at 5:39 and then Egan from Kaile Bushey at 8:28 to make it 2-0 in the early going.

But, the Hornets rallied to tie it at the half when Chelsea LaRose tallied on a rebound, with Laure Ouedraogo assisting, at 25:53 and then Sarah Carter with a rocket from Healey Mayette late in the stanza, at 37:46.

"It definitely helped settle us down to get the two early goals," Menton said. "It was especially nice to knock down the first oneAnd, even though they came back to tie it, I never felt we were in trouble.

"We wanted to win this game and knew what it had to take. We played well in overtime -- our starters are well-conditioned and there was some emotion of the game to also take into account."

"We haven't been in a situation this season where we have been down two goals early in a game of this magnitude," said Mulligan. "I've seen enough games where you can lose 6-0 or 7-0 when you fall behind by two goals that early. But, I was happy that we maintained our composure and knew we would get chances if we kept playing our game.

"I was thrilled to get out of the first half at 2-all. I was hoping that we would wear them down in the second half. But, they were able to play to their strengths and made adjustments, like keeping Kaile Bushey back to help on defense, to ensure that we wouldn't score. "
